Bangalore Airport to Coorg Taxi — 296 km from Devanahalli to the Kodagu Hills
A taxi from Bangalore airport to Coorg covers 296 km and takes six to seven hours. That is longer than the trip from the city itself, and the reason is geography: Kempegowda International Airport is at Devanahalli on Bengaluru’s far northern edge, and Coorg lies to the south-west, past Mysore. The car first has to get round or through the whole city before the real journey west begins. Plan on most of a day, and plan your landing time with that in mind.
Travellers on this transfer are usually heading for a coffee-estate homestay, a resort near Madikeri or Kushalnagar, or a family home in Kodagu. Plenty of them are coming off a long international flight, which changes how the day should be paced.
How the pickup works at Kempegowda airport
You will get the driver’s name, his photo and the car number before your flight lands. Once you are on the ground he calls or sends a WhatsApp message and waits at the arrivals pickup point with a name board. Share the flight number at booking: we watch the arrival, and if the plane is late the pickup slides to match. A delay that is not your doing costs nothing extra.
The airport entry or parking fee for the car is paid at actuals, along with the tolls on the expressway and the highways. Coorg is in Karnataka, like the airport, so there is no inter-state permit on this trip.
Getting past Bengaluru
This is the part that decides the day. From Devanahalli the driver can take the direct line south into the city and then west to the Mysore road, or swing round the western edge on the peripheral roads. Which one is quicker depends on the hour. Late at night or very early, going straight through is usually fine. In weekday rush hours, mornings and evenings, the city can swallow a great deal of time, and the driver will choose the way round that is moving. Landing in the middle of the day or late evening tends to give the smoothest exit.
West on the Mysore road, then up into Kodagu
Once clear of the city, the car runs out on the Bengaluru–Mysuru expressway past Ramanagara, Channapatna, the toy town, Maddur and Mandya, and on towards Srirangapatna. Near Mysore the route turns west through Hunsur and Periyapatna, and the farmland starts to give way to forest edges and the first coffee. Past the Tibetan settlements at Bylakuppe, with the golden-roofed Namdroling monastery a short way off the road, comes Kushalnagar, the gateway town to Kodagu.
From Kushalnagar the road climbs into the hills towards Madikeri. This is a ghat climb, so a hill charge applies, paid at actuals. The bends are steady rather than steep, but if anyone is queasy after a flight they should sit in front and eat lightly before the climb.
Choosing when to land, or when to set off
With six to seven hours on the road after the flight, the arrival time matters more than on a short transfer.
- Morning landing: leave the airport by late morning and you reach Coorg in the late afternoon or early evening, with the hill section done in daylight.
- Afternoon landing: you will climb into the hills after dark. It is workable, but mist on the ghat in the wet months slows things down.
- Night landing: many international flights arrive at Bengaluru late at night. Driving straight through means the night allowance for 10 PM to 6 AM, paid at actuals, and turning up at a homestay in the small hours, which few hosts expect. Resting near the airport and leaving in the morning is often the more comfortable choice.
For a meal stop on the way, Maddur, known for its crisp vada, and the stretch around Srirangapatna are the natural halfway points.
Homestay drops and luggage
Many Coorg homestays sit several kilometres off the main road, down narrow estate lanes between the coffee and pepper. Send the exact location pin and the host’s phone number when you book, so the driver can find the gate without circling the estate in the dark.
Holiday luggage adds up quickly. A sedan holds two large suitcases plus cabin bags. An SUV holds three, and an Innova four. In the monsoon months an SUV or Innova also gives more ground clearance on wet estate roads.
Seasons in Coorg
The south-west monsoon, roughly June to September, brings very heavy rain to Kodagu. The waterfalls are full and the hills are green, but the roads are slow and visibility on the climb can be poor. October to March is the clear, cool stretch, and March–April, when the coffee blossoms after the first showers, is a lovely time on the estates. Kaveri Sankramana at Talakaveri in mid-October and the Puthari harvest festival in November–December are the big Kodava occasions.
Why a car rather than a bus
Kodagu has no railway line, and buses to Madikeri leave from the city’s bus stations, not from the airport, so you would first have to cross Bengaluru with your bags to catch one. A car from the arrivals pickup point straight to the homestay gate takes that leg out of the day.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 296 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are clear before you confirm.
