Mangalore Airport to Dharmasthala Taxi — 74 km from Bajpe to the Manjunatha Temple
Dharmasthala is 74 km from Mangalore airport, about an hour and a half by road. That makes it one of the shortest airport-to-temple transfers in South India: a morning flight can have you at the Sri Manjunatha temple well before lunch, in time for the free annadanam meal the temple serves every day. Because this is a short run, it is billed at the site’s minimum one-way distance rather than at 74 km; the fare table on this page shows what that means for each car.
From the arrivals pickup point
Before your flight lands you are sent the driver’s name, photo and car number. After touchdown he calls or messages you on WhatsApp and waits at the arrivals pickup point with a board bearing your name. Give us the flight number with the booking: we keep an eye on the arrival and move the pickup to suit. If the delay is outside your control, there is no extra charge for it.
The car’s airport entry or parking fee is paid at actuals, as are tolls. Dharmasthala is in Karnataka, like the airport, so no inter-state permit is involved.
Bajpe, and why you skip the city
Mangalore airport is at Bajpe, north-east of the city, up on the plateau. Since Dharmasthala lies inland to the east, the driver stays on the outskirts instead of going down into the centre, and heads into the green interior of Dakshina Kannada. The road passes through areca nut and coconut gardens, rubber plantations and paddy, crossing into Belthangady taluk. Ujire is the last town before Dharmasthala.
It is a gentle drive with no ghat climbing, though the road is two-lane for much of the way and slows behind buses through the towns. In the monsoon, June to September, the rain on this coast is very heavy and the driver will take it slower.
Landing time, darshan and the annadanam
With only an hour and a half on the road, your flight time and the temple’s day line up easily. Darshan runs in the morning and again in the evening, with a break in between. A morning landing lets you reach in time for the late-morning darshan and the midday meal. An afternoon landing suits the evening darshan. If you land late, you can rest in Mangalore or check into a room at Dharmasthala and go the next morning.
The annadanam is one of the things Dharmasthala is known for: thousands of devotees are fed every day in the temple’s dining hall, free of charge, whatever their caste or faith. Plan to eat there at least once; it is part of the visit.
Traditional dress is expected at the temple. Dress conservatively and check the current rules at the entrance. Keep a light bag with what you need for the temple and leave the large suitcases in the car or at your lodge.
Bags and which car to take
Flights into Mangalore from the Gulf bring many families home with heavy luggage, and a pilgrimage group adds its own bags. A sedan takes two large suitcases plus cabin bags, an SUV three and an Innova four. If you are going on to other temples after Dharmasthala, an SUV or Innova gives you space for the whole circuit without repacking.
Going on to Kukke Subramanya and the rest of the circuit
Very few people fly into Mangalore for Dharmasthala alone. Kukke Subramanya, further inland towards the Western Ghats, is the most common next stop, especially for families booking Sarpa Samskara or other naga dosha poojas there. Those are usually reserved ahead, so fix the pooja date first and then the flight. Udupi’s Krishna temple, Kollur Mookambika, Sringeri and Horanadu make up the rest of the usual coastal and hill circuit.
You can keep the same car and driver for a multi-day trip, or book separate drops for each leg and a final one back to the airport. If the onward route climbs into the ghats, the hill charge on those legs is paid at actuals.
Near the temple
If you have an hour to spare, the 39-foot Bahubali statue on Ratnagiri hill is a short way from the temple, and the Manjusha museum holds a large collection of old objects and vintage cars. Both are easy to add on the day you arrive or before you leave for the airport.
When Dharmasthala is busiest
Lakshadeepotsava, the festival of lamps in the Karthika month around November–December, is the biggest event of the year. Maha Shivaratri, in February or March, also draws very large crowds, many of them arriving on foot. Weekends and long holidays are busy all year. On those dates, book your room early and allow extra time for the last few kilometres into town.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 74 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are clear before you confirm.
