The road southwest

The route runs through Namakkal and Karur to Dindigul, then west past Batlagundu into the Theni valley, with the hills closing in over the final hour.

A valley that grows grapes

The Cumbum valley south of Theni is one of the few places in Tamil Nadu where grapes grow well enough to fruit more than once a year, and roadside stalls sell them fresh through much of the year.

A sedan is fine to Theni; an SUV is better if you plan to continue up to Meghamalai or Kumily.

Dams, spice auctions and a river from across the border

The Vaigai dam near Andipatti and the Mullaperiyar waters that flow down from Kerala irrigate much of the district, which is why Theni is so much greener than the dry plains the road crosses from Salem. Bodinayakanur, just west of Theni, is a cardamom trading centre with auction houses where growers from the hills sell their crop, a side of the spice trade most visitors never see. Meghamalai, reached by a winding ghat road, has tea estates, mist and a quiet that the busier hill stations lost long ago, though accommodation there is limited and worth booking ahead. A sedan is comfortable for the drive to Theni itself, and travellers who want to go into the hills should allow extra time, since the ghat roads are slow and best driven in daylight.

Where to stop on the way

Karur, about ninety minutes from Salem, is a textile town with the old Pasupatheeswarar temple and plenty of places to eat. Dindigul, known for its hill fort and its biryani, is the usual lunch halt. Past Batlagundu the road climbs slightly and the Kodaikanal hills come into view on the right; this is where travellers heading for Kodaikanal turn off, and it is a pleasant place to stretch before the final run into the Theni valley.
