Salem to Trivandrum by road — distance and time
Salem to Thiruvananthapuram is about 520 km and the drive takes 9–10 hours in a car, including breaks. It is the shortest of these interstate runs and can be done comfortably in a single long day, though many people still prefer to start early or break it once rather than arrive tired. Booked as a one-way drop, you pay for the distance in one direction only and not for the car's empty return to Salem — on a cross-state run of this length that is the sensible way to book it.
The route — through the Palakkad Gap and down the Kerala coast
The drive runs west from Salem on NH544, the Salem–Kochi highway, through Erode, Tiruppur and Coimbatore, then crosses into Kerala at Walayar and continues through Palakkad and Thrissur towards Kochi. From there it turns south onto NH66, the coastal highway, running through Alappuzha, Kayamkulam, Kollam and Attingal into Trivandrum. NH544 is one of the better highways in the south — four-lane for most of its length — while the NH66 coastal stretch is busier and passes through more towns, so the Kerala half feels slower than the Tamil Nadu half even though the road is good.
The Palakkad Gap and the Kuthiran tunnel
The crossing into Kerala is the most distinctive part of this drive. West of Coimbatore the road passes through the Palakkad Gap, the one broad break in the Western Ghats, which is why this has been the natural road-and-rail route between Tamil Nadu and central Kerala for centuries — you climb gently rather than winding up a ghat. Beyond Palakkad, between there and Thrissur, the highway runs through the Kuthiran tunnel, a twin-tube six-lane tunnel opened in 2021–22 that replaced a slow, winding forest climb over the hill and cuts what used to be a notorious bottleneck to a minute or so. The change of landscape at the gap — from the dry Kongu plains to green, wet Kerala — is abrupt and worth watching for.
One driver the whole way, and rest on a day drive
The same driver takes you the whole distance from Salem to Trivandrum. At nine to ten hours this is a long day rather than an overnight ordeal, but it is still a full day, and the timing allows for a proper meal stop and shorter breaks along the way. Coimbatore, before the border, is the usual place for a real halt, and the Kerala towns further on have plenty of options for a shorter one.
Leaving Salem in the early morning is the comfortable way to do it — you clear the Palakkad Gap before the day heats up and reach Trivandrum in the evening with the drive done in daylight. If you would rather break it overnight somewhere like Coimbatore or Thrissur and finish fresh the next morning, tell us at booking and the driver will plan around it.
Crossing at Walayar — the inter-state permit
The drive crosses from Tamil Nadu into Kerala at Walayar, the border check post on NH544 in the Palakkad Gap. A car carrying passengers between states needs an inter-state permit, and that, along with the tolls on the highway, is charged as actuals — nothing is added afterwards. Carry a government photo ID for everyone in the car, as the check posts on this border sometimes ask for them.
The Kerala coast — backwaters and towns you pass
The southern half of the drive runs down the Kerala coast, and even from the highway it is a different sort of country. Alappuzha, on the way, is the centre of the backwaters — the network of lagoons and canals where the houseboats run — and Kollam sits at the southern end of the same waterways on the Ashtamudi lake. You are on the road rather than the water, so you pass these rather than stop in them, but if you want to build a backwater halt into the journey it is easier to plan at booking than to arrange on the day. The road here threads one town into the next almost without a gap, past churches, paddy fields and coconut, so it is scenic but rarely fast, and it is a good part of why the Kerala half of the drive takes longer than its distance suggests. For most travellers this stretch is simply the green, town-lined run that tells you Trivandrum is getting close.
Salem and Trivandrum — the two ends, and pickups
Salem at the start is a working town — a stainless-steel centre with the SAIL plant, and a mango and sago town locally called Mango City — and a fair number of these bookings are business or family trips between the Kongu belt and Kerala. Trivandrum at the other end is Kerala's capital, built around the Padmanabhaswamy temple at East Fort, and served by Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, one of the country's older airports and a heavy Gulf hub — which is why many of these trips end at the terminal with families flying out or coming home. The driver meets you with a name board at Salem junction or a home address, and at the Trivandrum end at the airport, the temple side, or a coastal stay like Kovalam. If you are connecting from a delayed flight we hold the car on the actual landing time without a waiting charge; give us the flight number at booking and there is nothing else to arrange. One driver stays with you for the full 520 km, and the fare is for the one-way drop only.
