What fills a day here

Yercaud Lake, coffee and orange plantations, and a scattering of old British-era bungalows are the town's whole draw, and because the hill station is compact, half a day is genuinely enough for most visitors — a full day suits anyone adding a longer walk or the coffee estates specifically.

The climb

The road up from Salem side runs through 20 numbered hairpin bends — short compared with the approach to Ooty or Kodaikanal, but genuinely steep, which is why Yercaud also carries this site's hill-station surcharge despite being the shortest of the three hill trips in this corridor.

The drive from Tiruvannamalai

West towards Salem, then up into the hills on the Yercaud ghat road. At 153 km this is a shorter, easier drive than the Ooty or Kodaikanal routes, and most passengers treat it as a day trip with the car waiting rather than an overnight hire.

Why Yercaud suits a day trip better than an overnight

Unlike Ooty or Kodaikanal, Yercaud does not need a multi-day stay to see properly — the lake circuit, a viewpoint or two and the coffee estates fill a comfortable day without feeling rushed, and being only two to three hours from Tiruvannamalai means you are not sacrificing much time to the road either way. It is the practical choice when a full hill-station trip is more than the schedule allows but the heat of the plains still needs escaping for a day.

What to expect on the drive up

The 20 hairpins are numbered and signposted, which makes the climb easy to track and gives a sense of progress a longer, unmarked ghat road does not. Traffic is generally light outside weekends and holidays, when the road up from Salem can back up behind slower vehicles on the narrower bends.

Several of the numbered hairpins have viewpoints over the plains below that are worth a short stop, particularly on a clear morning — tell the driver if you would like time for photographs rather than a continuous climb, it adds only a few minutes at each stop.
