Vellore to Pondicherry cab distance and route
Vellore to Pondicherry is 155 Kms and takes about 2–3 hours. The direct road goes east and south through Arcot, Cheyyar, Vandavasi and Tindivanam, joining the four-lane Tindivanam–Pondicherry highway for the last stretch. The middle section through Cheyyar and Vandavasi is a quiet two-lane road running through green, lightly trafficked country — pleasant driving, but not a road to try to make up time on.
The other option people ask about is going via Tiruvannamalai. That is a genuinely longer way round — closer to 190 km — so it is a choice you make for the temple, not for the driving. More on that below.
Pondicherry and Puducherry are the same place. Puducherry is the official name, Pondicherry the one most people still use and search for, and either spelling gets you the same car.
Travelling on from CMC Vellore after treatment
A large share of the people who book this route are not tourists to begin with. Christian Medical College draws patients from across India and beyond — the hospital was founded by Dr Ida Scudder, who opened a single-bed clinic in 1900 and the forty-bed Schell hospital two years later, and it now sees thousands of outpatients a day across its campuses. Families often spend days or weeks in Vellore for consultations, surgery or follow-up, and when it is over, a short quiet break by the sea before the journey home is a very common plan.
That kind of trip needs a particular sort of drive rather than a fast one. Tell us at booking if a passenger has recently been discharged, needs the front seat, uses a wheelchair, or needs the car stopped rather than the schedule kept. The driver who picks you up at the hospital gate is the one who takes you all the way to Pondicherry — there is no change of vehicle and no change of driver partway, which matters more than it sounds when someone is unwell. If you are being picked up from CMC, give us the block or gate name; the campus has several and they are not interchangeable.
We are a taxi service and nothing more — we do not advise on medical matters or timings. What we can do is put the same car at the same door for the return leg if you tell us the date.
Tiruvannamalai and Girivalam — worth the detour, if planned
Tiruvannamalai is not on the direct road. Going via Tiruvannamalai adds roughly 35 km and the better part of an hour, so it is an addition to the trip rather than a free stop — but it is the most common addition people make, and for good reason.
The Arunachaleswarar temple sits at the foot of Arunachala hill, and the Girivalam, the barefoot circumambulation of the hill, runs about fourteen kilometres around it. It is done especially on full moon nights, when the town fills and the road around the hill is closed to vehicles for long stretches. If you want to include it, book it as a multi-stop drop and tell us whether you are walking the full Girivalam or only visiting the temple — the two need completely different amounts of time, and on a Pournami the difference between them is several hours.
Vellore before you leave
If you have a spare morning in Vellore, two things are worth it. Vellore Fort in the centre of town was built in the sixteenth century under the Vijayanagara empire and later held by the Bijapur sultans, the Marathas and the British; the Jalakandeswarar temple inside it is a fine piece of Vijayanagara stone carving and is still an active temple.
The other is the Sripuram Golden Temple at Thirumalaikodi on the edge of town — the Sri Lakshmi Narayani temple, inaugurated in August 2007, whose shrine is clad in gold foil hand-mounted on etched copper over a hundred-acre site. Visitors walk in along a long star-shaped path to reach it. It is a short drive from the city and easy to include before setting off, but it is genuinely popular, so allow more time than the distance suggests.
What Pondicherry is like when you get there
Pondicherry is small, flat and easy to be in, which is much of its appeal after a stretch in a hospital town. The French Quarter or White Town is a grid of quiet streets of colonial-era houses running down to the sea, and the Promenade — Rock Beach — is closed to traffic in the evenings, so the entire seafront becomes a walk. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a few streets back from it, and Auroville with the Matrimandir is a short drive out to the north.
Most of that is within walking distance of itself, so once we have dropped you, you will not need a car for the town. If you do want to see Auroville or the beaches north of the centre on the way in, tell us at booking — it falls inside the same drop and does not change the fare.
Best time to make the drive
October to March is the comfortable season on this coast, and it is when Pondicherry is at its best. The north-east monsoon between October and December brings heavy but short spells of rain; the road stays open, though the Cheyyar–Vandavasi stretch is worth taking slowly in a downpour. Between April and June the interior is genuinely hot, which is the argument for a morning start rather than an afternoon one.
Leaving Vellore between seven and eight in the morning puts you in Pondicherry for a late lunch with the afternoon free. Friday evenings are the one time to avoid arriving, because the Tindivanam–Pondicherry stretch carries the weekend traffic out of Chennai and hotels fill up on the same night.
Booking it as a one-way drop
A drop taxi means you pay for the 155 km in one direction rather than funding the car's empty return to Vellore, which is the right structure for a trip where nobody is coming back the same day. One driver stays with you for the whole route. Tolls and any permit at the Puducherry border are charged as actuals, and nothing is added afterwards.
If you are being collected from the hospital, a hotel or Katpadi junction, the driver will be there with a name board. For passengers connecting from a delayed flight into Chennai and continuing from there, we track the actual landing time rather than the booked one and hold the car without a waiting charge — give us the flight number at booking and there is nothing else to arrange.
