Chennai to Madurai Taxi — Distance, Time & Best Route
Chennai to Madurai is roughly 460 km and takes eight to nine hours including breaks. There are two sensible ways to do it. The inland route via Villupuram, Trichy and Dindigul is the faster and more predictable one, carried mostly on four-lane highway. The coastal alternative down the ECR through Pondicherry and Chidambaram is slower but far more interesting if you are not in a hurry.
The Inland Route via Trichy
On the inland route the first two hours out of Chennai are the least pleasant — city traffic to Tambaram, then the run down to Villupuram. After that it opens up. Trichy is the natural halfway point and the usual place to stop for a meal; from there the road to Dindigul and on into Madurai is straightforward.
Reaching Meenakshi Amman Temple on Time
If you leave Chennai before six in the morning you will reach Madurai in time for an afternoon at the Meenakshi Amman Temple, which is what most people on this route are travelling for. The temple closes in the middle of the day and reopens in the late afternoon, so an early start genuinely changes what you can fit in.
Choosing a Cab for the Chennai to Madurai Drive
This is long enough that vehicle choice matters more than on shorter runs. A sedan is fine for two people with light luggage; for four adults over nine hours an SUV is worth the difference. Overnight departures are common on this route and we run them regularly, but tell us in advance so we can put a driver on it who knows the road after dark.
Madurai to Chennai Return Trips
The reverse leg, Madurai to Chennai, is priced the same way and takes about as long, though the run into Chennai in the evening can add an hour if you hit the city at the wrong time.

The overnight run, and why it suits this route
460 km is long enough that when you leave changes the whole character of the trip. A night departure from Chennai gets you into Madurai around dawn, which is the best possible time to arrive if the temple is why you are coming — you are there for the morning, with the day intact rather than spent in a car. It also sidesteps the slow crawl out of Chennai. A daytime run is perfectly comfortable, but it costs you the day at the far end.
Trichy as the natural halfway stop
Trichy sits close enough to the midpoint to be the obvious break, roughly four hours from Chennai, and it is where most drivers plan the proper stop. On a night run it is usually the only one. If you have time in hand, the Rock Fort and Srirangam are both close to the highway and turn a stop into a short visit rather than a pause — but say so at booking, because it changes the timing at the Madurai end.
Arriving in Madurai around the temple
The streets immediately around Meenakshi Amman are narrow, one-way in places, and closed to vehicles at some hours. A car cannot deliver you to the temple gate, and any driver who promises otherwise has not driven it. The normal drop is a short walk away on one of the Masi streets, which is what locals do too. If you are travelling with elderly passengers, mention it and the driver will pick the closest gate that is actually reachable on the day.
Chithirai, and the weeks around it
Madurai's Chithirai festival fills the city. Accommodation goes early, traffic around the temple becomes genuinely difficult, and journey times into the centre stretch well beyond the usual. None of that is a reason not to come — it is the most extraordinary time to be there — but it is a reason to book the car further ahead than you normally would and to expect the last few kilometres to be slow.
Onward to the south
Madurai is rarely the end of the trip. Kodaikanal, Rameswaram, Thekkady and Kanyakumari are all reachable from it, and a good number of Chennai-to-Madurai bookings are the first leg of something longer. If you know the onward plan when you book, a single multi-day booking is usually cheaper and always simpler than arranging a fresh car in an unfamiliar city.
