Chennai to Dindigul Taxi — 420 km to the Town of Locks, Biryani and the Rock Fort
Dindigul lies about 420 km and seven and a half hours south-west of Chennai, a busy district town spread beneath a huge bare rock crowned by a fort. For many travellers it is also a gateway: Kodaikanal, Palani and the Sirumalai hills are all within easy reach.
The way down
The car takes the GST Road through Chengalpattu and Villupuram, then the four-lane highway via Ulundurpet and Perambalur, passing Samayapuram on the approach to Trichy. From the Trichy bypass it turns south-west on the Dindigul road through Manapparai, known across the state for its crisp murukku, and Vadamadurai, before the rock fort rises ahead.
What Dindigul is known for
Dindigul's hand-made locks carry a geographical indication, and a few workshops still make them the traditional way. Its biryani, made with small-grain seeraga samba rice and small pieces of meat, has spread to restaurants across Tamil Nadu, but locals will tell you it tastes best at home. The rock fort was built in the early seventeenth century under the Madurai Nayaks and later held by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan before passing to the British; the climb is steep but short, with a view over the whole town. Leather tanneries and spinning mills keep the local economy busy.
Leaving Chennai at the right time
Two plans work well. An early-morning start, around 5 or 6 am, gets you to Dindigul by mid-afternoon with lunch on the way. A late-evening start has you arriving at dawn, which suits people heading on to Kodaikanal or Palani; that plan includes the night allowance, shown on your quote. We pick up from homes across Chennai, the airport, Central, Egmore, Koyambedu and Kilambakkam.
Beyond Dindigul
Kodaikanal is about three hours away by the Batlagundu ghat, Palani's hill temple is about an hour, and Sirumalai, a small hill range with a winding road and cool coffee estates, is closer still. Madurai is roughly an hour to the south. In town and nearby, the Thadikombu Soundararaja Perumal temple and the Abirami Amman temple are worth a visit, and Chinnalapatti, home to the Gandhigram Rural Institute, is known for its handloom saris.
Breaks on the road
Perambalur makes a good tea stop, and the Mariamman temple at Samayapuram is right beside the highway if you want darshan on the way. Manapparai, about an hour before Dindigul, is the last proper break and the place to pick up a packet of murukku.
Who books and which car
Families visiting home, students returning to colleges in and around Dindigul, traders, and holidaymakers using Dindigul as the first night of a Kodaikanal trip. A sedan is comfortable for four over seven and a half hours; families with elders and luggage are better off in an SUV.
What the fare includes
The quoted fare is all-inclusive for the full 420 Kms: vehicle, driver, fuel, tolls and any state permit. The only extras are parking at stops you choose and a night allowance if the car runs between 10 PM and 6 AM. A round trip adds the driver's daily bata for time spent away from home, and the full breakdown is shown before you confirm the booking.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Parking and the night allowance aside, the price you see is the price you pay.
