Bangalore to Chennai Taxi — Distance, Time & NH48
Bangalore to Chennai is about 350 km on NH48 and takes six to seven hours. It is the busiest inter-city corridor in South India and the road reflects that: four lanes or more the whole way, well surfaced, heavily tolled, and with plenty of decent places to stop.
Where to Break the Drive
Krishnagiri, roughly two hours out of Bangalore, is where most drivers break. After that the road runs down through Vellore and on to Chennai. The two slow sections are at either end — clearing Bangalore's eastern edge in the morning, and coming into Chennai in the evening. Between them you make good time.
Overnight and Early-Morning Departures
Because the corridor carries so much business traffic, early-morning departures and late-evening returns are the norm. We run this route overnight as well; on a road this well lit and this busy it is a reasonable option if you want to arrive first thing.
Tolls and Inter-State Permit
This crosses from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu, so an inter-state permit applies and is charged as actuals. Tolls on NH48 are substantial over 350 km and are charged as actuals — worth knowing when comparing quotes, because a rate that looks lower per kilometre often just moves those costs around.
Bangalore to Chennai One Way Drop Taxi Fare
One-way drop is what most passengers want here and it is what we price for: you pay for the distance you travel, not the return leg.

The new Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway, honestly
The four-hour Bangalore–Chennai drive everyone has read about is coming, but as of now it exists only in parts. The greenfield Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway runs 262 km from Hoskote to Sriperumbudur, cutting across a corner of Andhra Pradesh, and is designed to bring the run under three hours. The 71 km Karnataka section from Hoskote towards the KGF border has been open since late 2024, and a further stretch in Andhra Pradesh opened in mid-2026, taking the usable length to roughly 100 km — but the Tamil Nadu end is unfinished and one package near Kancheepuram remains stuck, so there is no way to drive it end to end yet.
Until it opens fully, through taxis run the proven NH48 route, and the 6–7 hour timing on this page reflects that road as it actually is, not the expressway as it will be. When the missing sections open, this becomes one of the fastest inter-metro drives in the country.
The endpoints are worth noting for what they imply: Hoskote sits on Bangalore's north-eastern edge, convenient from Whitefield and the airport side of the city, while Sriperumbudur lands you on Chennai's industrial west, close to both the factories and the NH48 approach. Access-controlled and built for 120 km/h, the finished road will suit a taxi better than almost any other vehicle — no two-wheelers, no tractors, no towns.
Airport to airport: Kempegowda to Chennai
Both ends of this route are anchored by airports, and the combination works well in a cab. At Kempegowda International the driver meets you at the arrivals exit with a name board, tracks the flight rather than the booked time, and waits free of charge if you land late. Allow for the airport's position, though: it sits on the far northern edge of Bangalore, so the car must cross to the Chennai side of the city before the highway proper begins — late-night arrivals feel none of it, daytime arrivals should budget an extra hour.
At the other end the geography is kinder. Chennai airport lies on the south-western approach to the city, reachable off the bypass before the city traffic begins at all, which makes a Bangalore-to-Chennai- airport drop noticeably quicker than a drop into the city centre. Plenty of passengers use the run exactly that way — an overnight car from Bangalore to a morning international departure out of Chennai — and for that plan the drop time is worked backwards from the check-in deadline rather than forwards from the pickup.
The Kanchipuram silk detour
About 75 km before Chennai, Kanchipuram sits just south of NH48 — close enough that turning in costs little. It is one of the seven moksha-giving cities of Hindu tradition and the home of the Kanchipuram silk saree; the Kamakshi Amman, Ekambareswarar and Varadaraja Perumal temples are all within the town, and the weaving showrooms sell a few steps from the looms. A two-hour halt covers one temple and a saree purchase comfortably, with time left for a plate of the town's famous temple-style idli. On a one way drop the detour simply becomes part of the route — mention it at booking so the timing allows for it, and remember that the weaving showrooms keep shop hours, which is an argument for the daytime run over the overnight one if Kanchipuram is the point.
Taxi or Shatabdi and Vande Bharat
This corridor has some of the best trains in the south — the Shatabdi and Vande Bharat cover Bangalore to Chennai in around four and a half to five hours station to station — so a taxi has to justify itself, and it does so at the ends. The train requires reaching the station for a fixed slot, capping your luggage, and finding transport again at the far end; door to door across two large cities, the difference shrinks to little or nothing. A cab leaves when you are ready, carries whatever fits in the boot, stops when children need it, and finishes at an exact address in Anna Nagar or Adyar rather than at a platform. For groups of three or four the arithmetic per head usually settles it, and for anyone whose plans are still moving — a hospital discharge, a meeting that may overrun, a flight not yet ticketed — the cab's indifference to timetables is the whole argument.
Moving house between Bangalore and Chennai
A steady share of one way bookings on this route are relocations — software transfers, college admissions, a household shifting between the two cities. A drop taxi suits the move day well: suitcases, a television carton and the things too fragile for the packers travel in the boot with you, the same driver stays from doorstep to doorstep, and because a drop is billed on one-way distance you are not paying for the car's empty return. For a full household the movers take the furniture; the family, the documents and the valuables go by cab.
Pongal, Deepavali and the festival rush
Twice a year this corridor briefly becomes one of the busiest in India. At Pongal in mid-January and at Deepavali, Bangalore's large Tamil population heads home more or less at once — train quotas vanish weeks ahead, bus fares triple, and the roads out of Bangalore on the eve of the festival crawl until midnight. A taxi booked a few days ahead sidesteps the ticket scramble entirely, but be realistic about timing: leave on the morning of the day before the festival, or very late at night, rather than joining the 4-to-9 pm exodus on Hosur Road.
The tide turns the other way once the festival ends — the Sunday and Monday after Pongal see the same crowd flowing Chennai to Bangalore — so if your dates fall in that window, book the return leg as early as the outbound one. A one way drop in each direction, booked ahead, costs less than festival-week bus fares for a family and removes the one thing those weeks never offer, which is certainty.
