Coimbatore to Dindigul taxi distance and route

Coimbatore to Dindigul is 150 Kms and takes about 2–3 hours. The road is NH83, the Coimbatore–Nagapattinam highway, running east through Pollachi, Udumalpet, Palani and Oddanchatram before it reaches Dindigul. People sometimes ask for the route "via Pollachi" and sometimes "via Udumalpet" — these are the same road, one after the other on the same highway. Four-laning of the Pollachi–Dindigul stretch was sanctioned in 2018 and work has been going on along it in sections since, so surface quality varies a little but the alignment does not change.

As a one-way drop, you are billed for 150 km rather than for a 300 km round trip. On a corridor where most people are going one way — a factory visit, a hospital appointment, a temple trip, a hill station — that is the sensible way to book it.

Pollachi and the coconut belt

The first stretch out of Coimbatore takes you into coconut country. Pollachi, about 48 km from Coimbatore, sits in one of the densest concentrations of coconut groves in India and runs one of Asia's larger copra trading markets. Its Tuesday cattle market has been going for generations, and the shaded avenues of the groves are so heavily used by Tamil film units that visitors recognise the roads before they have ever been on them.

Pollachi is also the turn-off point for the Anamalai hills. Aliyar Dam is about 24 km from Pollachi on the Valparai road, with Monkey Falls a few kilometres further up, and Topslip and Parambikulam lie in the same direction. None of that is on the way to Dindigul, but if you want a half day in the hills before continuing, it is easier to plan it as a multi-stop drop than to organise it afterwards.

Palani temple, directly on the route

Unusually for a business corridor, this route passes straight through a major pilgrimage town. Palani is on NH83 between Udumalpet and Oddanchatram, and the Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy temple stands on the hill above it — one of the six principal abodes of Murugan and among the most heavily visited temples in Tamil Nadu.

The hill shrine can be reached by the steps, by the winch, or by the rope car, and which one you use makes a considerable difference to how long the stop takes. If anyone in the group has difficulty with the climb, mention it at booking and the driver will drop as close to the winch and rope car station as vehicles are allowed. A short darshan stop adds an hour or so to the drive; a festival-day stop can add a great deal more, so on Thaipusam and Panguni Uthiram plan the day around the temple rather than around the driving time.

Two engineering towns at either end

Coimbatore and Dindigul are both manufacturing towns, and most people making this trip are travelling for work rather than for pleasure. Coimbatore is known as the pump city of Asia; its motor and pump makers supply roughly two-thirds of India's requirement, and the town holds two Geographical Indications of its own — the Coimbatore Wet Grinder, made by several hundred manufacturers in and around the city, and Kovai Cora cotton, the local cotton saree, registered in 2014–15.

Dindigul at the far end is the Lock City. Its handmade locks received a Geographical Indication tag in 2019 covering production within about five kilometres of the town, a craft roughly 150 years old and still carried on in a large number of small workshops rather than one plant. Dindigul also has a long-established leather tanning trade and a spinning mill belt around Vedasandur. Between engineering buyers going east and textile and leather buyers going west, this road carries a lot of quiet weekday business.

Dindigul biryani when you arrive

If you reach Dindigul near a mealtime, the biryani is worth the detour into town. Dindigul's version is made with seeraga samba rice — short-grained, aromatic and grown only in parts of Tamil Nadu — rather than basmati, which gives it a denser, more spice-soaked character than the biryani styles most visitors know. The best-known name, Thalappakatti, started here in 1957 as a small eatery run by Nagasamy Naidu, who was known by his turban long before his shop was known by its food. The town still has a cluster of biryani shops of its own, and drivers who work this route eat at them often enough to have opinions.

Continuing to Kodaikanal from Dindigul

A large share of Coimbatore–Dindigul passengers are really heading for the hills. From Dindigul, Kodaikanal is about 95 km via Batlagundu and Perumalmalai, which is the standard approach and the one most drivers prefer. There is also a road up from Palani, which you have already passed on this route, with twenty-one hairpin bends on the climb — useful to know if the main Batlagundu road is congested.

If Kodaikanal is where you are actually going, book the drop to Kodaikanal rather than to Dindigul. It keeps one driver and one fare for the whole journey and avoids arranging a hill car at short notice. Note also that following a Madras High Court direction, vehicles entering Kodaikanal during the April to June season have been required to carry an e-pass obtained in advance. The requirement has been renewed season by season, so check the current position when you book.

Coimbatore airport and railway pickups

Coimbatore International Airport is on the eastern side of the city, which puts it on the correct side for a Dindigul run — you are not crossing town before you start. Your driver waits at the arrivals gate with a name board, and if the flight is late we go by the actual landing time and hold the car without a waiting charge. Give us the flight number at booking and there is nothing further to arrange.

The same applies at Coimbatore Junction and at hotel pickups. One driver stays with you for the whole 150 km rather than handing over partway, and tolls, parking and any permit are charged as actuals on top of the fare, with nothing added at the end of the trip.
