Chennai to Kumbakonam Taxi — 280 km into the Temple Heartland of the Delta
At 280 km and about 5.5 hours, this route takes you from Chennai down the GST Road or the coast into the Cauvery delta and Kumbakonam, a town so full of temples that it is usually treated as the base for a whole region of pilgrimages.
The road south
Most drives use the GST Road through Chengalpattu, Tindivanam and Villupuram, then turn southwest toward the delta, while some travellers prefer the coastal East Coast Road via Pondicherry and Chidambaram; the fare is the same, so tell the driver which you prefer.
Leaving Chennai
The slowest part of the day is the first 40 km, through Tambaram and Vandalur, so pickups before 6 am or after 9 pm save real time, and airport pickups at Meenambakkam, Egmore, Central and Koyambedu are all easy to arrange.
Vehicle choice
A sedan works for a couple or small family; pilgrim groups doing several temples in a day are more comfortable in an SUV.
Booking
Most people book a round trip with local running included, so the driver stays with you between temples.
Why pilgrims base themselves here
Kumbakonam holds the Mahamaham tank, which draws crowds once every twelve years, and the Sarangapani and Kumbeswarar temples, while the nine Navagraha temples lie within about an hour, so many visitors complete the circuit over one or two days. The Airavatesvara temple at Darasuram, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its fine stone carving, is a few kilometres out of town, and the town is also known for its degree coffee, brass and bell-metal work, and betel leaf. Temples generally close in the early afternoon and reopen in the evening, so an early start from Chennai lets you fit in a proper morning darshan before the midday break.
Before you travel
Book a room before you leave, especially on festival weekends, carry modest clothing for temple visits, and tell us if you plan to add Darasuram, Swamimalai or the Navagraha temples so the driver can plan the day around opening hours. Keep some cash for temple parking and shoe stands, and let us know if any relatives find long queues difficult.
Where to stop on the way
Tindivanam and Villupuram both have clean highway restaurants, and Vikravandi or Panruti, further on, offer simple tea and fuel stops before the delta begins. If you take the coast road, Pondicherry is a natural place to break for a meal.
What the fare includes
The quoted fare covers the vehicle, driver, fuel and driver bata for the full 280 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and all of them are listed before you book. A round trip adds the driver's daily bata for time spent away from home, and the full breakdown is shown before you confirm the booking.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are always clear before you confirm.
