Because of this, the forest department operates strict gate timings for vehicle entry to protect wildlife during their most active hours. The checkposts close entirely to all traffic between 9 pm and 6 am. There is no paying your way through and no exception made for taxis — if you reach the gate after it closes, you wait until morning.

In practice, this single fact dictates the schedule of your entire first day. To drive 501 km from Chennai and clear the forest gates before dusk, an early morning departure — ideally before 6 am — is practically mandatory. Driven at a sensible pace in the daylight, with the Nallamala forest closing in on both sides, the ghat road up to the Krishna gorge is comfortably one of the finest drives in the region. The bends are continuous rather than severe, but anyone prone to motion sickness should sit in the front and keep meals light.

Inside the temple and darshan

Srisailam is unusual among major temples in allowing ordinary pilgrims sparsha darshan — physically touching the lingam — during specific hours of the day. If this is central to your pilgrimage, it is essential to check the Devasthanam's current schedule before setting your travel dates and to inform your driver so your arrival can be timed accordingly. The temple opens before dawn and stays open into the night, with a scheduled pause in the late afternoon between the morning and evening sessions.

On an ordinary weekday, a morning or early afternoon arrival means a manageable queue. However, weekends, Pradosham days, and Mondays in auspicious months run much heavier. Footwear stands and cloakrooms sit outside the temple complex, and your cab will wait at the designated town parking areas, a short walk from the gopuram. The afternoon pause in darshan is not wasted time; most visitors use this window for lunch and to visit the river before returning for the evening schedule.

Patala Ganga, the ropeway, and the dam

Most visitors pair their temple visit with Patala Ganga, the bathing ghat on the Krishna river located deep in the gorge below the town. Taking a dip here traditionally precedes the temple darshan. You can walk down the long flight of steps to the water, or take the ropeway, which runs from early morning until late afternoon and provides a clean view of the river and surrounding hills on the descent.

From the ghat, you also get a clear view of the Srisailam dam, one of the country's biggest hydroelectric projects, with its crest gates stretched across the gorge. In a good monsoon, when the gates are lifted and the Krishna thunders through, the sight draws visitors on its own merit. If you are travelling between August and October, ask your driver to time your viewpoint stops to take it in.

Maha Shivaratri and the crowded weeks

Two periods completely transform the town. Maha Shivaratri, falling in February or March, is the biggest event of the year, bringing lakhs of pilgrims for the Brahmotsavam and car festival. The other is Karthika Masam, the holy month around October and November, when tens of thousands arrive every weekend. Travelling from Chennai during these weeks is entirely possible, but you must expect the forest road traffic to multiply and the darshan queues to take several hours.
