Thirukovilur sits 202 km south-west of Chennai on the banks of the Thenpennai, and almost nobody goes there by accident. It is a destination people choose, usually for one of two temples that have been drawing visitors for well over a thousand years, and that shapes what this trip needs to be. What people come here for

The Ulagalantha Perumal Temple is the reason most first-time visitors make the journey. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams — the temples sung by the Azhwar saints, and the list that serious Vaishnavite pilgrims work through over a lifetime. The deity here is Trivikrama, Vishnu in the striding form that measured the worlds in three steps, and the standing figure is among the tallest of its kind anywhere in Tamil Nadu. You do not need to know the theology to feel the scale of it; the sanctum is built around a figure that most people look up at for a while before saying anything.

The second is the Veerateeswarar Temple, which belongs to a quite different circuit. It is one of the Ashta Veerattanam — eight temples across Tamil Nadu that mark the heroic acts of Shiva, each one a different act at a different place. Thirukovilur's is the destruction of the demon Andhakasura. Devotees working that circuit of eight arrive knowing exactly why they are here, and the town is used to receiving both kinds of pilgrim in the same week.

There is also the Azhwar tradition, which is specific to this town and which people often only learn about once they arrive. The first three Azhwars — Poigai, Bhutham and Pei — are held to have met here for the first time, crowded into a narrow passage during a storm, and their verses are traditionally dated from that meeting. For anyone following Vaishnavite history rather than just visiting temples, Thirukovilur is where a good deal of it begins.

Why a car rather than the train

There is no direct rail approach worth planning around. The realistic train route puts you at Villupuram Junction, which is a genuinely large station and well connected to Chennai — and then leaves you 42 km short, at whatever hour your train happened to arrive, looking for onward transport in a town you do not know. That last 42 km is the whole problem with the rail option, and it is the reason most people booking this trip book a car for the full distance.

The drive itself is straightforward. The route runs south on the Chennai highway through Tindivanam, turns inland before or after Villupuram depending on traffic, and the last stretch is ordinary district road. It is not a hard drive and it does not need an early start for road reasons.

Timing the trip around the temples, not the traffic

The thing worth planning around is not the highway, it is the fact that Tamil Nadu temples close in the middle of the day. Both the main temples here follow the usual pattern — open in the morning, shut for several hours around midday, open again in the late afternoon. A car leaving Chennai at six in the morning puts you in Thirukovilur mid-morning with time to see the Perumal temple properly before it closes. Leaving at nine means arriving into the closed hours and waiting.

If you are visiting both temples, give yourself either a full morning or a morning and a late afternoon. They are close to each other and you can walk between them, but neither rewards being rushed, and the Ulagalantha Perumal complex in particular is larger inside than it looks from the street.

Combining it with the rest of the district

A fair number of these bookings are not Thirukovilur alone. Villupuram is 42 km away and Ulundurpettai 39 km, and having the car for the day is what makes a two- or three-temple itinerary possible at all. Groups continuing south towards Trichy sometimes treat Thirukovilur as the first stop of a longer run rather than a round trip from Chennai, and the same car carries on.

What to expect on arrival

Thirukovilur is a municipality and a working town, not a resort. There are places to eat and the temples are the centre of everything, but plan on this being a day trip or an overnight with modest expectations rather than a destination with a hotel strip.
