Chennai to Villupuram distance and driving time

Chennai to Villupuram is 165 km by road and takes two to three hours. The spread in that figure is almost entirely about where in Chennai you start and at what hour — once the car is clear of the city the highway run itself is consistent.

The trip is searched for as a Chennai to Villupuram drop taxi, one way cab, oneway taxi or outstation cab, and Villupuram is also written Viluppuram on railway boards and government signage. Same town, same district headquarters.

The route down GST Road

The drive follows the Grand Southern Trunk Road — GST Road, carrying NH32 — south out of Chennai through Tambaram and Chengalpattu to Tindivanam, then turns off for the last stretch west into Villupuram. Most of it is wide, divided highway with service roads through the built-up sections.

The only part worth planning around is the first 25 km. GST Road through Tambaram and Chromepet is one of the busiest urban corridors in the state, and between roughly 8 and 10.30 in the morning and 5 and 8 in the evening it can add half an hour on its own. Once past Chengalpattu the road opens out and stays open.

Chennai Airport to Villupuram

Chennai International Airport at Meenambakkam sits directly on GST Road, which makes it one of the better starting points for this route rather than a detour — the car joins the highway immediately instead of crossing the city first. Airport drops to Villupuram are a routine part of what we run on this corridor.

The driver meets you at the arrivals gate with a name board and waits at no extra charge if the flight is late. We watch the actual arrival time rather than the time you booked, so a delayed landing is not something you need to phone about. Give us the flight number when booking and there is nothing further to do.

Villupuram as a junction town

Villupuram is a district headquarters and, more to the point for anyone travelling, a serious railway junction. Villupuram Junction has four lines running out of it — the Chennai Beach main line towards Thanjavur, the chord line to Trichy, the branch to Pondicherry and the branch to Katpadi — and it is the third largest junction in Tamil Nadu by number of branch lines, after Salem and Trichy.

That shapes a lot of the car traffic. Many passengers on this route are making a connection rather than ending their journey: down from Chennai by road, onward by train, or the reverse. If you are catching a train, tell us the departure time rather than a pickup time and we will work backwards from it.

Gingee Fort and the UNESCO listing

The best-known thing in Villupuram district is Gingee Fort, sometimes written Senji, a hill fort spread across three fortified hills roughly an hour west of the town. It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

In July 2025 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Maratha Military Landscapes of India, a group of twelve forts — and it is the only one of the twelve outside Maharashtra. If you are building a day around it, it is a climb rather than a stroll, so start early and plan for the fort to take most of the morning.

Where people go on from here

Villupuram is a gateway as much as a destination. Pondicherry is under 40 km east and about an hour away. Tiruvannamalai lies to the north-west on NH38, which is the route most Karthigai Deepam traffic takes. Southward, the same highway runs to Ulundurpet and on to Trichy.

The Kallakurichi belt, carved out of Villupuram district as a separate district in late 2019, sits south-west of the town and is reached through the same corridor. If your actual destination is one of these, book the drop to it directly. It stays one fare and one driver, and it is cheaper than paying for this leg and then hiring locally.

Business and transit travel

This is a working route more than a holiday one. A good share of the bookings are day trips — district office work, court appearances, college admissions, site visits into the Kallakurichi and Tindivanam belts — where someone needs to be there by ten and back in Chennai the same night.

If that is your pattern, book it as a round trip rather than two separate drops. The same driver stays with you through the day, the car waits while you are inside, and you are not standing outside a government office at four in the afternoon trying to find a car home.

What a one-way drop means here

On a 165 km run, a one-way drop means you pay for those 165 km rather than for the 330 km a round-trip rental would bill you to make the same journey. That is the whole of the difference; the car and the driver are the same either way.

Tolls, parking and any permit are charged as actuals on top of the fare and shown as they are paid, with nothing added afterwards. There are toll plazas on the GST Road stretch and the amount depends on the vehicle, so we do not quote a figure in advance that we would then have to correct.
