The road into Kerala
The plains section passes coconut groves and wind farms, and after Udumalpet the road enters the Anamalai foothills, crossing the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, where deer, elephants and giant squirrels are sometimes seen, before dropping through Marayoor's sandalwood forest into tea country.

What to see once you arrive
Munnar's tea estates surround the town, and the Tea Museum explains the story of the industry. Eravikulam National Park protects the Nilgiri tahr, and the park closes for a few weeks each year in the calving season, usually around February and March, so check before you plan around it. Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and Top Station are other regular stops, and the cool climate means evenings need a jacket. Roads around the town are narrow and busy at weekends and during holidays.
Good to know
Around Munnar, Lockhart Gap and Kolukkumalai give wide tea-country views, and Attukad waterfalls are a short drive from town. The Kanan Devan tea estates dominate the valley, and many visitors buy fresh tea and homemade chocolate from small shops. Evenings can be cold and misty, and driving at night on the ghat is best avoided, so it helps to check in by early evening.
