Hosur to Pondicherry Taxi — 281 km from the Border Hills to the Bay of Bengal
Hosur sits on the Deccan plateau, right where Tamil Nadu meets Karnataka, and Pondicherry sits on the Coromandel coast. Between them is 281 km of road and a drive of 5–6 hours, dropping from cool, high ground to the warm, flat coast. Our riders on this pair are mostly people who work in Hosur’s factories and SIPCOT estates: some heading home to Pondicherry or to the villages around it, others taking a weekend by the sea with friends. We also carry families going to JIPMER for treatment and parents dropping students at colleges on the East Coast Road.
Hosur pickups
The car comes to your door wherever you stay in Hosur: Mathigiri, Bagalur Road, Rayakottai Road, Alasanatham, the SIPCOT phases, Zuzuvadi and the town centre near the bus stand. Company guest houses and hotels along the highway are routine pickups, and so is the Hosur railway station. If you finish a shift late, we can wait at the factory gate. The drive begins on the Tamil Nadu side, so the first leg runs south-east along the Krishnagiri highway.
The route, town by town
From Hosur the road descends past Shoolagiri to Krishnagiri, about an hour out. There the driver turns off the Chennai highway towards Uthangarai and Chengam, a quieter two-lane road through groundnut fields and rocky hills. It reaches Tiruvannamalai, where Arunachala rises behind the town and the temple towers are visible from far off. From Tiruvannamalai the car heads for the coast either via Gingee and Tindivanam or via Villupuram, depending on traffic and road work, and enters Pondicherry from the west.
A longer alternative stays on the four-lane highway through Krishnagiri, Vaniyambadi and Vellore before cutting down towards Tindivanam. It is easier driving but adds distance, so most drivers prefer the Tiruvannamalai line. If you have a preference, say so at booking.
A detour worth the time
Because the route goes straight through Tiruvannamalai, many travellers stop for darshan at the Arunachaleswarar temple. Allow an hour or two, more on weekends and on full-moon days when pilgrims walk the Girivalam path around the hill. A little further on, the forts of Gingee stand on three rocky hills beside the road; even a short halt to look at them breaks up the drive. Let us know before the trip so the extra time is planned.
Leaving at the right hour
Morning is best. Starting from Hosur around 6 AM gets you through Krishnagiri before the trucks build up and into Pondicherry by lunch, with the afternoon free for the beach. Many factory staff prefer to leave straight after a Friday shift; that works, but if the car runs between 10 PM and 6 AM a night allowance applies. Tolls, parking and the night allowance are paid at actuals and are not part of the fare.
The Pondicherry permit
Pondicherry is a Union Territory, separate from Tamil Nadu. Any permit charge for entering it is paid at actuals, on top of the fare shown on this page.
Drops in Pondicherry
We drop at hotels and guest houses in the French Quarter near the Promenade, at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, at JIPMER hospital, at Pondicherry University in Kalapet, at Auroville just north of the town, at the bus stand and at the railway station. Some heritage lanes are narrow and one-way, so the driver may stop at the nearest corner and help with bags.
Going home for the festivals
Hosur has a large working population from the coastal and delta districts, so Deepavali in Aippasi (October or November) and Pongal in Thai (mid-January) are the heaviest weeks. Buses out of Hosur are packed on festival eves and the Krishnagiri highway slows down. Book your car early and travel a day before the rush if you can. In the Tamil month of Masi (February–March), Pondicherry celebrates Masi Magam, when temple deities are carried down to the seashore for a ritual bath and the beaches fill with devotees; it is a memorable time to visit, but hotels book up.
Bus or car?
There are buses from Hosur towards Pondicherry, often with a change at Krishnagiri, Tiruvannamalai or Villupuram, and there is no convenient direct train. For one person travelling light, the bus is the cheaper choice. For two or more, for anyone with heavy luggage, or for a patient travelling to JIPMER, a taxi from the door avoids changes and long waits.
Which car to take
Two or three people with weekend bags fit comfortably in a sedan. Families and friend groups of five to seven should take an SUV, and the Innova Crysta gives elders more legroom for the 5–6 hours. All cars are AC and the same driver handles the whole run.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 281 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
