Hosur to Velankanni Taxi — 417 km to the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health
From Hosur to the shrine town of Velankanni on the Bay of Bengal is roughly 417 km, a drive of 7 to 8 hours across almost the full width of Tamil Nadu. Most of the people who book it work in Hosur’s factories and the IT and electronics parks of south Bangalore, and they are usually travelling as a family to fulfil a vow, give thanks for a recovery, or simply join the crowds at Annai Velankanni during a feast. A car with one driver for the whole journey lets you leave straight after a shift and arrive together, with the elders and children rested.
Pickup in Hosur and nearby Bangalore
We collect riders from homes and company quarters around the SIPCOT industrial areas, Mathigiri, Bagalur Road, Rayakottai Road and the town centre, as well as from the Hosur bus stand and railway station. Shift workers often ask for a pickup straight from the factory gate; that is fine as long as the security desk allows a car to wait.
Many Hosur riders actually live just across the border in Attibele, Chandapura, Bommasandra or Electronic City. We can start the trip there too, or from Kempegowda International Airport if relatives are flying in. Note that a pickup on the Karnataka side makes it an inter-state trip, so the Karnataka permit is paid at actuals. Starting from Hosur itself keeps the whole journey inside Tamil Nadu.
Across the state to the coast
The first hour runs down the national highway to Krishnagiri. From there the driver heads south-east into the plains towards Trichy and Thanjavur, and the last stretch crosses the Kaveri delta through Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam, where the land turns flat and green with paddy and coconut. Velankanni lies a short distance south of Nagapattinam, right on the coast. The exact line in the middle of the trip depends on the time of day and road works, and your driver will know which way is moving best.
Plan on two proper breaks: one around the halfway point for a meal, and a short tea stop in the delta. Highway food around Krishnagiri and Salem is plentiful, and in the delta towns you will find simple meals-on-a-banana-leaf places almost everywhere.
Leaving after a shift, or leaving at dawn
Two patterns are common. Some families leave on a Friday evening after work and drive through the night, reaching Velankanni in time for early morning Mass. This saves a day of leave but means driving between 10 PM and 6 AM, which attracts a night allowance at actuals. Others leave Hosur around 5 or 6 AM and arrive by early afternoon, with the evening free for the rosary procession and a walk on the beach. With small children or elderly parents, the daytime option is easier on everyone.
Feast days and the busiest weeks
The great annual feast begins with the flag hoisting on 29 August and runs to the Nativity of Mary on 8 September. Through those eleven days the town fills with lakhs of pilgrims, many of whom walk the last part of the way. Christmas, New Year, Holy Week and Easter are also very crowded, and most weekends see large numbers. During the feast, cars are generally stopped short of the shrine and parked at the edge of town, so allow for a walk and keep your luggage light.
If you want a quieter visit, an ordinary weekday outside the feast and holiday weeks is the time to go. The shrine holds Masses through the day in several languages, so there is usually a service soon after you arrive.
Where the car drops you in Velankanni
Most riders are dropped at their lodge or near the Basilica itself. Other places families usually want to see are the Our Lady’s Tank chapel, the Morning Star Church and the shrine museum with its offerings from devotees. The beach is a few minutes’ walk from the Basilica.
Nearby, Nagore Dargah, a short drive north past Nagapattinam, is visited by people of all faiths, and the Murugan temple at Sikkal is close to Nagapattinam too. Either can be added to a round trip without much effort; mention it while booking so the driver can plan the extra distance.
Bus, train or taxi from Hosur
There are overnight buses from Bangalore and Hosur towards Nagapattinam and Velankanni, and during the feast special services are added, but seats go quickly and the buses run full. Velankanni has a small railway station with few direct trains, so rail usually means a change at Thanjavur or Nagapattinam. For a family of four to seven with bags, a car is usually the simplest way — one booking, door to door, and no worrying about connections.
Picking the right car
A sedan suits up to four people with two medium suitcases. For extended families, most Hosur riders choose a seven-seat SUV or an Innova Crysta, which has more room for elders on a long day. Parish groups and larger families can ask us about a Tempo Traveller. All our cars are air-conditioned.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 417 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are clear before you confirm.
