Which road actually goes to Ooty

Ask three drivers how to get from Salem to Ooty and you may hear three answers, so let us be straight about it. The sensible route — the one we run unless you ask otherwise — goes west on NH544 and climbs the Mettupalayam–Coonoor ghat. There is also a northern way through Sathyamangalam's forests, dramatic and beautiful, but longer in practice and hedged with forest-checkpost timings that can wreck a schedule. Both are described honestly below.

By the main route the trip is 200 km and takes about four and a half hours — roughly three on the plains and the rest on the climb. It splits so cleanly into flat and ghat that you can feel the journey change gear at Mettupalayam, where the Nilgiris suddenly stand up out of the plain in front of the windscreen.

The main run: Bhavani, Avinashi, Mettupalayam

Out of Salem the car takes NH544 past Sankagiri's fort rock, crosses the Cauvery at Bhavani, skirts Erode at Chithode and runs the four-lane through Perundurai to Avinashi. There it leaves the highway, cuts across through Annur to Mettupalayam at the foot of the hills, and the climb begins. The plains section is fast, divided highway nearly throughout, with the big food courts of the Avinashi stretch making the natural break before the ghat.

It is worth taking that break even on a short trip: the climb ahead rewards a driver and passengers who are fed, watered and unhurried, and there is far less worth stopping for once the bends begin.

Fourteen hairpins to Coonoor, then the plateau

The ghat from Mettupalayam to Coonoor is NH181, and its 14 hairpin bends make it the busiest and most forgiving of the Nilgiri climbs — wide enough for two buses to pass, climbing through betel and then tea, with the rack line of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway threading alongside; the fruit stalls at Burliar mark the traditional pause. From Coonoor the road runs on across the plateau past Wellington to Ooty, tea gardens on both sides for the last half hour.

Passengers prone to motion sickness should sit in front, take the tablet before Mettupalayam rather than on the first bend, and keep the break at the bottom light. The climb takes about an hour and a quarter in normal traffic; on season weekends the last stretch into Ooty adds to it.

The forest way round: Sathyamangalam and Bandipur

The northern option leaves NH544 near Erode side, runs through Gobichettipalayam to Sathyamangalam, and climbs the famous 27 hairpins of the Dhimbam ghat through the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve — genuine wildlife country, with the Bannari checkpost open roughly 6 am to 9 pm and night movement restricted to protect animal crossings. To reach Ooty this way you must then carry on through Talavadi and the Bandipur side, where the forest road closes to traffic from 9 pm to 6 am, and the Masinagudi short-cut up the Kalhatti slope has been restricted for tourist vehicles.

Our honest advice: it is a wonderful drive to do for its own sake, or when your plan already includes the Mysore side, but as a way of simply getting from Salem to Ooty it adds distance and gate-timing risk for no saving. We quote it happily — with the timings spelled out — and we will tell you if your schedule does not fit its gates.

Why the driver matters on a ghat

On the plains, one competent driver is much like another; on fourteen hairpins they are not. Hill driving is a specific craft — holding a low gear downhill instead of riding the brakes, sounding the horn into blind bends, giving the government buses the wide line they will take anyway, and refusing the overtake that saves thirty seconds. Our Ooty cars go out with drivers who run the Nilgiris regularly, and that is most of what you are paying for on the last 50 km.

It is also why we plan the climb for daylight where the booking allows: mist can sit on the upper bends in the early morning and after rain, and an unhurried daylight ghat is safer and considerably better to look at.

April to June: the season, and the May flower show

Ooty's high season is April to June, when the plains bake and the hills sit at a springlike 15 to 25 degrees — which is precisely when Salem, one of the hotter cities on the plain below, most wants to leave. The peak inside the peak is the flower show in May, held in the Government Botanical Garden that has been growing since 1848, when the town fills to bursting for the show days.

For a May trip, book the cab several days ahead, leave Salem by 6 am, and be on the ghat before the day-tripper wave — the difference between an early and a late start on a flower-show weekend can be more than an hour of crawling into town.

December and January: frost on the grass

The other Ooty surprises people more. In December and January clear nights drop toward zero, and early mornings can show frost on open ground — this in a state where the plains are at 30 degrees the same afternoon. It is a beautiful, empty, blue-skied time to visit, and the drive up from Salem is at its quietest.

Pack genuinely warm clothes — sweaters, a proper jacket for evenings, something for children's ears — because hotel rooms in Ooty are rarely heated and the cold arrives the moment the sun goes. Nothing about the road changes in winter beyond early-morning mist on the ghat, which your driver will simply take slowly.

Coonoor or Kotagiri instead of Ooty

A quiet word for repeat visitors: you do not have to go all the way to Ooty. Coonoor, at the top of the ghat, is smaller, calmer and surrounded by the best tea scenery in the district, with Sim's Park and the Dolphin's Nose viewpoint close by; Kotagiri, reached by a gentler road off the same climb, is quieter still. Both are the same booking from Salem — a drop is a drop, and the fare follows the kilometres actually driven, so a Coonoor drop costs less than an Ooty one, not more.

Booking the Salem to Ooty one way

A one way drop taxi to the hills means you pay for the 200 km driven, not for the empty car to come back down — on a ghat route, where a round-trip rental also bills waiting days, the difference is larger than usual. Tolls on the plains section are charged as actuals, one driver takes you the whole way, and luggage for a hill holiday — the extra bags, the food carton, the pram — is exactly what the boot is for.
