The Nilgiri Mountain Railway's blue toy train climbs the same territory and is a UNESCO World Heritage line, if you want to see the route from a different angle once you arrive.

The drive down from Tiruvannamalai

West across the state, through Salem and Coimbatore districts before turning into the hills at Mettupalayam. Coimbatore itself is 88 km short of Ooty, and a number of bookings on this route treat Coimbatore airport as the practical arrival point rather than driving the full distance from Tiruvannamalai in one push.

Weather, even in summer

Ooty is genuinely cold by Tamil Nadu standards for most of the year, and fog on the upper ghat road in the early morning is routine rather than unusual. Carry warm clothing regardless of the season you are travelling in.

Which vehicle for the climb

An SUV handles the Nilgiri hairpins more comfortably than a sedan, particularly for a family group with a full week's luggage for a hill stay, and it copes better with the cold, damp mornings common on the upper ghat road. The toy train as a day trip in itself

If you would rather see the Nilgiri climb by rail than by road once, the blue toy train between Mettupalayam and Ooty is a full-day experience in its own right and books out well ahead in season. Many visitors drive up and take the train down, or the reverse, rather than riding it both ways — worth deciding before you fix your travel dates, since tickets need to be arranged separately from the taxi.
