The green coconut groves and canal-side roads around the town have made it one of Tamil cinema's most used outdoor locations for decades. Topslip, inside the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, offers forest department safaris and stays that are best booked in advance, and elephant and gaur sightings are not unusual on the approach roads. A sedan handles the highway leg from Salem well, and travellers heading into the reserve or up to Valparai should plan to drive the ghat sections in daylight, since the bends are tight and wildlife often crosses the road near dusk.

Where to stop on the way

Sankagiri, just outside Salem, has a hill fort visible from the highway, and Bhavani near Erode is where the Bhavani and Kaveri rivers meet at the Sangameswarar temple, a short detour worth the time for pilgrims. Tiruppur and Palladam sit around the two-thirds mark with plenty of highway restaurants catering to the textile trade. On the approach to Pollachi, look out for tender coconut stalls; the town's coconuts are the reason for its fame and they are sold fresh at the roadside for a fraction of city prices.
