Bangalore to Pollachi taxi: distance and route
Pollachi is about 349 km from Bangalore, a drive of 6 to 7 hours. The route runs via Hosur and Krishnagiri on NH44 to Salem, then west on the Salem-Kochi highway (NH544) through Erode and Coimbatore before turning south for the last stretch into Pollachi. It is four-lane highway for most of the distance, and Pollachi sits just off it, close enough to Coimbatore to feel like an extension of that city's textile and agricultural belt rather than a separate detour.
A coconut economy
Pollachi and the country around it carry one of the highest concentrations of coconut groves in India, and the town holds one of the larger coconut and copra trading markets in South India, alongside a strong trade in jaggery, bananas and other produce from the surrounding farms. Driving in from Coimbatore or out towards the dams, the road runs between tall stands of coconut palm on both sides for long stretches — a landscape that has quietly made Pollachi one of the more recognisable rural backdrops in Tamil cinema. Towards the hills, the farmland around Sethumadai, roughly 25 km out on the Valparai road, adds cocoa and mango to the mix alongside the coconut, a small sign of how the crops shift as the land starts climbing towards the Anaimalais.
Tamil cinema's rural backdrop
Pollachi has been used as a filming location since at least 1964's Kadhalikka Neramillai, and the count of films shot in and around the town since then runs into the hundreds — enough that it is sometimes called a smaller cousin of Chennai's Kodambakkam film district. The coconut-grove roads around Sethumadai and towards Aliyar, along with the hairpin bends on the way up to Valparai overlooking the dam, turn up repeatedly as the setting for family scenes and song sequences, and if the landscape looks familiar on the drive, that is very likely why.
A railway town before it was a film set
Pollachi's other, older claim is to railway history. Its junction dates back to 1898, when the metre-gauge line to Podanur first opened, and the Pollachi-Palakkad line that opened in the 1930s once carried some of the last narrow and metre-gauge services in this part of the country before gauge conversion work closed the old track after more than a century of use. The station itself, and the small colonial-era railway quarters around it, are a quieter reminder of the town's history than its film reputation, and worth a glance if you have time before or after the drive.
Gateway to Valparai and the dams
Pollachi is also the natural starting point for the climb to Valparai, a hill town reached by a long stretch of hairpin bends through the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, declared a tiger reserve in 2007 and part of the wider Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve that UNESCO recognised in 1986; sections of its high-altitude grasslands and shola forest are counted among the Western Ghats' World Heritage components. About 24 km from Pollachi is the Aliyar Dam, built in 1962 as part of the Parambikulam-Aliyar Project, sitting at the foot of the ghat with the hills of Valparai rising behind it. About 5 km short of the dam, a short walk off the road leads to Monkey Falls, a roughly 60-foot cascade in a pocket of evergreen forest that is one of the more popular stops for anyone driving the ghat rather than heading straight through — and beyond the dam, the road continues roughly 35 km further to Topslip, the entry point for forest excursions inside the reserve and home to the Kozhikamuthi elephant camp, where trained kumki elephants are bathed and fed in full view of visitors in the early morning and late afternoon. Entry to the reserve needs a permit from the Wildlife Warden's office, which is in Pollachi itself, so anyone planning to continue this far usually stops in the town before heading up rather than after. Passengers using this route to get into the hills typically treat Pollachi as the last flat, fast stretch of a longer day, with the ghat road itself best driven in daylight.
Booking from Bangalore
We pick up across Bangalore and from Kempegowda International Airport, where the driver meets arriving flights with a name board and waits free of charge if the flight is delayed. One driver takes the car the whole way, whether the trip ends at Pollachi or continues up towards Valparai. Tolls and any state permit charges are charged as actuals, and because this is a one-way drop you pay only for the distance you travel, not for the car's return leg.
