Tirunelveli to Neyveli Taxi — 471 km to the NLC Township
This is one of the longer one-way runs we do inside Tamil Nadu: about 471 km from Tirunelveli in the far south to Neyveli in Cuddalore district, usually 8 to 9 hours on the road. Neyveli is a planned township built around the lignite mines and power stations of NLC India, and the people who make this trip mostly have work there — new joiners reporting for duty, staff on transfer, contract workers starting a posting, and families going to see relatives who live in the township blocks. Others are students heading to colleges in the Cuddalore and Villupuram area.
Starting out from Tirunelveli
We pick up across the city: Palayamkottai, the Town area near the Nellaiappar Temple, the colonies along the bypass, the Tirunelveli Junction railway station and the bus stands. Rides from Tenkasi, Ambasamudram, Valliyur and Thoothukudi can be arranged too, though they lengthen the day. If you are flying in, Thoothukudi airport is the closest; we can meet you there and head north directly.
When the trip is a move rather than a visit, tell us how much you are carrying. A seven-seat SUV or an Innova Crysta with the last row folded takes a surprising amount of bedding, kitchen boxes and suitcases. Our cars are passenger vehicles, though, so furniture and large appliances need a separate goods carrier.
The long road north
The first leg follows NH 44 north past Gangaikondan, Kovilpatti, Sattur and Virudhunagar to Madurai. From there the driver takes the road towards Trichy, skirts the city, and continues north-east on the Chennai highway past Perambalur. For the final stretch the car leaves the highway and runs east on smaller roads through the Vriddhachalam side into Neyveli. Most of the distance is on good four-lane road, which is why a trip of this length still fits inside a working day.
Since it is long, the driver will suggest a break roughly every two to three hours. Kovilpatti is known across the state for its groundnut kadalai mittai, which makes a good packet for the road. Virudhunagar is famous for its fried parotta, and Madurai, around the third hour, is the natural lunch stop if you left early. Trichy and Perambalur offer plenty of highway restaurants for an evening tea.
When to set off
A 5 or 6 AM start from Tirunelveli gets you into Neyveli in the mid to late afternoon, with time to settle in, find the quarters or guest house and buy provisions before dark. Leaving later means arriving at night, when township roads are quiet and finding a particular block can take longer. Driving between 10 PM and 6 AM is possible but attracts a night allowance at actuals. For someone who must report for duty the next morning, we usually suggest travelling the day before.
Arriving in Neyveli
The township is laid out in numbered blocks with wide roads and plenty of trees, quite unlike a typical Tamil Nadu town. We drop riders at homes and quarters in the blocks, at NLC offices and the general hospital, at guest houses, at the Neyveli bus stand, and in the neighbouring villages and Mandarakuppam where many contract workers live. Mine and power-station areas are restricted, so the car will stop at the gate; keep your joining letter or company ID handy if you are reporting for work.
Places close to Neyveli
Settling in, people often ask what is nearby. Vadalur, a few kilometres away, has the Sathya Gnana Sabai founded by Vallalar, where the Thai Poosam jyothi darshan in Thai (January–February) draws large crowds. Vriddhachalam has the old Vridhagiriswarar Temple, and Panruti, a short drive east, is known for its jackfruit and cashew. Chidambaram and its Nataraja Temple are about an hour away, and the coast at Cuddalore is closer still.
Train or taxi?
Rail is a real option for this pair. Trains from Tirunelveli towards Chennai run through Madurai, Trichy and Vriddhachalam Junction, and from Vriddhachalam it is a short road ride into Neyveli. For a single traveller with a backpack and a confirmed berth, that works well. The taxi is the better choice when you are moving with family and luggage, when tickets are waitlisted around Pongal or Deepavali, or when you want to go from your door in Tirunelveli to your quarters in Neyveli without a change.
What is outside the fare
The fare table lists the car, driver, fuel and driver bata. Tolls along the national highways and any parking are paid at actuals on top of that, as is the night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM. The whole route stays inside Tamil Nadu and has no ghat section, so there is no permit or hill charge.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 471 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
