Attur, roughly an hour from Salem, is the usual tea and breakfast stop, with the old Attur fort standing beside the river on the edge of town. Chinnasalem, a little further on, is known across the region for its handloom silk and cotton sarees, and weavers' shops line the main road for anyone who wants a quick look. Vriddhachalam, the last town before Neyveli, has the temple mentioned above and a cluster of ceramic workshops selling pots and terracotta. Brief stops like these fit easily into a three-hour drive and do not change the one-way fare. Travellers visiting family in the township often ask the driver to stop at a sweet shop in Vriddhachalam on the way in, a small local custom worth knowing about.
