Bangalore to Kotagiri taxi distance and route

Bangalore to Kotagiri is 324 km and takes five to six hours on the road. The shorter and more common way up is the same road used for Coonoor: south on the Mysore highway through Bandipur and Masinagudi, up the Sigur (Kalhatty) ghat to Ooty, and then out along the Doddabetta road to Kotagiri — a stretch that passes close to Doddabetta Peak, the highest point in the Nilgiris, and runs through tea estate country most of the way. The alternative climbs from the Coimbatore side, via Salem, Sathyamangalam and Mettupalayam, and reaches Kotagiri on its own ghat road out of Mettupalayam rather than through Ooty; it is longer and exists mainly for travellers already on the Coimbatore side rather than for a Bangalore start.

Whether booked as a Kotagiri taxi, a Kotagiri cab or a one way drop, the fare is for the 324 km actually driven, and tolls on the highway stretch are charged as actuals.

The Bandipur night closure

As on the Coonoor route, the drive is shaped by one fixed rule: the stretch of highway through Bandipur Tiger Reserve is closed to all traffic, cars included, between 9 pm and 6 am, every day of the year, following a Karnataka High Court order after repeated wildlife deaths on the road. There is no exception and no way through after the gate shuts. A departure from Bangalore by around 6 am clears Bandipur with hours to spare in daylight; leaving in the early afternoon risks reaching the gate after dark with the forest already closed for the night, so the start time is worth planning around this rather than around personal convenience alone.

The first hill station the British ever saw

Kotagiri holds a specific historical distinction among the three main Nilgiri towns: it was the first place the British actually set foot in the hills. John Sullivan, then Collector of Coimbatore, reached the area in 1819 and built a small bungalow at Kannerimukku, near what is now Elk Falls, before going on to develop the larger Ooty as the district's hill capital. That original house survives as the Sullivan Memorial, with a small museum of colonial-era photographs and artefacts inside it, and it is Kotagiri's way of pointing out that it was Ooty's older, quieter sibling from the very start rather than an afterthought.

Catherine Falls and Elk Falls

Two waterfalls sit within a few kilometres of the town and are the usual reason for a half-day stop. Catherine Falls, about 8 km out, drops around 250 feet and is named after the wife of a British coffee planter; Elk Falls, closer in at about 7 km, is a smaller 80-foot drop but easier to reach on foot from the road. Neither needs a long detour, and both fit comfortably into a stay that is otherwise built around the tea gardens and the town itself.

A little further out, about 18 km from the town centre, Kodanad View Point sits at roughly 6,000 feet and looks out over Rangaswamy Peak, the Rangaswamy Pillar, Dolphin's Nose, Catherine Falls and the Bhavanisagar reservoir on the plains far below — on a clear day it is the single widest view available from any of the Nilgiri towns. Rangaswamy Peak itself is sacred to the Irula, Badaga and Kurumba communities, three of the tribal groups native to the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the 5,000 sq km ecosystem that was declared India's first biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1986 and that Kotagiri sits inside the edge of.

Tea, and coffee before it

Coffee came first here — the earliest plantation in the area dates to 1843 — before tea gradually overtook it as the dominant crop through the late nineteenth century, a shift credited in local accounts to plantations started by the daughter of the early planter M.D. Cockburn. What is left today is a landscape of both: tea estates dominate the slopes around the town, but pockets of older coffee growing survive alongside them, which gives Kotagiri a slightly different character from the tea-only estates further along the ridge at Coonoor.

Quieter than Ooty, quieter than Coonoor

Of the three main Nilgiri hill towns, Kotagiri is consistently the least crowded. It has no lake to draw the day-trip buses that fill Ooty's roads, and even against Coonoor it sees a fraction of the weekend traffic, largely because it sits slightly off the main Ooty–Coonoor road rather than directly on it. For travellers who have done Ooty before and found it too busy, Kotagiri is usually recommended as the genuine alternative rather than Coonoor, which itself has grown busier as Ooty's traffic has spilled over into it.

Kempegowda Airport to Kotagiri

The driver meets international and domestic arrivals at Kempegowda's exit with a name board, and waits free of charge for a delayed flight since the pickup is planned against the tracked landing time rather than the printed schedule. The airport's position on the city's northern edge adds a short crossing before the Mysore road begins, which is worth an extra hour in the plan on a daytime arrival.

Season and timing

October to March is Kotagiri's settled, cool season, and April to June is its mild summer — genuinely comfortable rather than hot, which is why a fair share of visitors travel then specifically to escape the plains. Whatever the month, the Bandipur and Sigur closures apply every single night of the year, so the early-departure advice from Bangalore holds regardless of season.
