Bangalore to Mettupalayam taxi: distance and route

Mettupalayam is about 329 km from Bangalore, a drive of 6 to 7 hours. The shorter and more scenic way down runs via Mysore, Gundlupet and the Bandipur and Mudumalai forests on NH766, dropping down through Sathyamangalam onto the Coimbatore plain and into Mettupalayam from the north-west. It is the route most of our Nilgiris-bound passengers take, both for the wildlife corridor itself and because it is considerably shorter than the alternative that swings east through Salem and Coimbatore first.

Driving through Bandipur and Mudumalai

The stretch of highway through Bandipur National Park in Karnataka and Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu has carried a night traffic ban since 2009: cars, buses and trucks are stopped from using this forest section between 9 pm and 6 am, a rule brought in after a run of animal deaths on the road. It affects timing rather than the route itself — if your journey would otherwise cross this stretch at night, we plan the departure so you clear it in daylight, which usually means an early start from Bangalore. Within daylight hours the road is open as normal, and this is one of the more reliable stretches in South India for sighting elephant and deer from the car, so it is worth keeping the windows down and the speed sensible.

Mettupalayam and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Mettupalayam's reason for being on most itineraries is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the toy train to Ooty that starts here. First proposed by the British in 1854, the terrain was difficult enough that construction did not begin until 1891, and the line was built and opened in stages over the following years: Mettupalayam to Coonoor in 1899, then the steeper final climb from Coonoor through Fernhill to Udagamandalam in 1908. It has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 2005 as part of the Mountain Railways of India. It is the only rack-and-pinion railway in the country and the steepest railway line in Asia, climbing from 326 metres at Mettupalayam to 2,203 metres at the top through 16 tunnels and around 250 bridges and curves over roughly 46 km via Coonoor. The steam locomotives that haul the steeper Mettupalayam-Coonoor stretch were originally built in Switzerland and are now built and maintained at the Golden Rock Workshop in Tiruchchirapalli.

What the ride up actually looks like

The line climbs through a small string of stops that most road travellers never see: Kallar at the base of the ghat, Adderley where the train once paused to take on water beside its long pillared bridges, and Hillgrove, a quiet station in thick forest known among regulars for the birdlife around the platform. Further up, the train passes Wellington, home to an army cantonment and staff college, before running into Coonoor, the Nilgiris' second hill station, and on towards Lovedale and Ooty itself. None of this is visible from the highway — it is the reason people choose the train over driving the ghat, and part of why seats on it are worth booking ahead rather than turning up on the day. The ghat is also prone to landslides in a heavy monsoon, and the railway has been known to run to altered timings or stop running altogether when the slopes above the track turn unstable; October to June is the more dependable window for the ride, and it is worth checking the running status before you fix a departure date from Bangalore around it.

The town itself

Away from the railway, Mettupalayam is a working market town on the Bhavani river, at the point where the plains give way to the Nilgiri foothills. It has long served as a trading point for banana and areca nut grown in the surrounding country, and its markets still draw growers in from the villages around it. A little further out, the Bhavanisagar dam — among the larger earthen dams anywhere in the world — sits on the same Bhavani river near Sathyamangalam, on the very stretch most of our passengers on the Mysore-Bandipur route already pass through on the way in. Most visitors pass through Mettupalayam itself quickly on the way to the hills, but it is worth knowing the town has a working life of its own beyond being a railway junction.

Using Mettupalayam as a staging point

The practical reason this exists as its own booking is that Mettupalayam is where a long highway run and a mountain climb meet. Some passengers take the drop here specifically to catch the toy train onward; others use it as the base for a ghat-road drive up through Coonoor by car when the train is inconvenient or fully booked — the road distance from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor is about 55 km and takes roughly an hour and a half to two hours by car, sharp bends and hairpins included, and it runs alongside the railway for a good part of the climb. Either way, the 329 km from Bangalore is the flat, fast part of the journey, and it makes sense to cover that stretch by road and save the slow, spectacular climb for the train, or for daylight driving on the ghat.

Pickups are available across Bangalore and from Kempegowda International Airport, where your driver waits at arrivals with a name board and does not charge for waiting time if the flight lands late. One driver takes the car the whole way to Mettupalayam. Tolls and any state or forest permit charges are billed as actuals, and because this is a one-way drop you pay only for the 329 km from Bangalore, not for the car's return leg.
