Mettur Dam, built between 1925 and 1934 and formally inaugurated on 21 August 1934 by the then Governor of Madras, Sir George Stanley — which is why the reservoir behind it is officially named the Stanley Reservoir — is one of the oldest large dams on the Kaveri and remains central to irrigation across Tamil Nadu. The masonry and concrete dam runs to roughly 1,700 metres in length and about 65 metres in height, holding back close to 93 million cubic metres of water, and it took nine years and the labour of thousands of workers to complete. The water it impounds is released downstream to feed canal systems that irrigate a dozen or more districts, besides supplying drinking water. For a district town, Mettur's influence on the state's agriculture is out of proportion to its size.

Two kinds of power at Mettur

The town runs on power in a literal sense as well. A hydroelectric station at the foot of the dam, with a capacity of around 240 MW, generates electricity from the released water, and separately, Mettur is home to a much larger coal-fired plant — the Mettur Thermal Power Station, run by the state generation utility, with a combined capacity above 1,400 MW built up in stages from the late 1980s through to a newer supercritical unit added in 2012. Between the two, Mettur is as much an industrial power town as it is a dam-and-reservoir one, which is unusual for a place this size and worth knowing if you are expecting a quiet riverside town rather than one with a working power complex on its edge.

June 12, the day the whole delta watches

Every year on 12 June, the dam's sluice gates are opened in a ceremonial event, usually attended by a senior state minister, marking the start of the irrigation season for the Cauvery delta — the farmland across Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and parts of Pudukkottai that depends on this release for kuruvai, the short-duration paddy crop sown right after. The date itself was fixed decades ago to line up with the monsoon further west, and it has been kept, water permitting, for most of the dam's 92-year history. It is one of the few days of the year the dam is genuinely newsworthy across the state rather than just a local landmark.

Reservoir tourism at Stanley Reservoir

The reservoir itself draws a steady trickle of weekend visitors for boating, the gardens and parks laid out around the dam, and the open-water view that is otherwise rare on this drive. Fishing and birdwatching around the reservoir edge are common enough pastimes locally, and the dam gardens are a popular spot for family picnics when the water level is high enough for the fountains and viewpoints to be at their best. It is an easy, low-effort stop rather than a full day's outing — most visitors spend an hour or two at the dam viewpoint and gardens before moving on.

Hogenakkal, further along the same river

Hogenakkal Falls, where the Kaveri drops through a rocky gorge and visitors take coracle rides through the rapids, sits further upstream on the same river system, within a feasible add-on drive if you are already this far out from Bangalore. Ask your driver about combining the two when you book, rather than treating them as separate trips — the road between the two follows the same general river valley, and doing both dam and falls in a single day is a common pattern for weekend visitors.

Anyone travelling this route via Salem also has the option of a short detour up into the Shevaroy Hills to Yercaud, known for its coffee, orange and pepper plantations and its noticeably cooler air than the plains below. It is not on the direct road to Mettur, so it needs to be planned as a deliberate stop rather than something you pass on the way, but it pairs naturally with a Mettur trip for anyone with a spare half day and wanting a change of altitude as well as scenery.

The road from Bangalore to Mettur

As with most drives on this corridor, the fast part is Bangalore to Krishnagiri on the wide NH44 highway; Krishnagiri to Salem continues on the same road, and the last leg off the highway into Mettur town is shorter and slower, running past agricultural land and smaller settlements before the dam comes into view. Salem, roughly two hours in, is the sensible place for a tea break if you are not stopping earlier.
