Oddanchatram is about 346 km from Bangalore, a drive of 6 to 7 hours. The route runs via Hosur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Salem on NH44, then on towards Karur and Dindigul before turning off onto the road that carries traffic between Palani and Dindigul into Oddanchatram itself. It is highway for most of the distance, with the final stretch running through smaller Dindigul-district towns.

The last leg of this drive passes two towns worth knowing rather than just driving through. Karur, with a history running back over two thousand years to its time as a Chera dynasty capital, is today a major hub for home-textile manufacturing and for building bus bodies, and its highway stretch is usually busy with transport trucks tied to both trades. Dindigul, a little further on, is built around a 17th-century hill fort — begun in 1605 by the Madurai Nayak king Muthu Krishna Naicker and later held for a time by Tipu Sultan — and has a nationwide reputation for its biryani, distinctive enough that the town is often called the biryani capital in its own right. Neither needs a special stop, but both explain some of the traffic and trade you pass on the final stretch into Oddanchatram.

A vegetable market that supplies half the state

Oddanchatram's own reputation rests on its Gandhi Market, one of the largest vegetable markets in Tamil Nadu and a major point from which produce grown in the surrounding countryside — tomato, drumstick, brinjal, ladies finger and chillies among the main crops — is exported onward to other states and across the border into Kerala. Traders, transporters and commission agents make up a steady share of our bookings on this route, arriving to buy or coordinate consignments rather than to sightsee, and for that kind of trip a predictable arrival time at the market matters more than anything else.

The temple of the candy-loving Murugan

A short distance from the town centre is a small Murugan temple dedicated to Kuzhandai Velappar, better known locally as Mittai Murugan — the candy-loving child form of the deity. The temple's story goes that a devotee, his prayer for a child answered, distributed sweets to his family without first offering any at the temple; when the deity appeared in his dream asking why he had been left out, the devotee returned with an offering of candy, and offering sweets here has been the custom ever since. It is a modest shrine with three sub-shrines and painted inner walls, and it sits close to the road that continues on to the much larger Palani Andavar temple about 20 km further.

On the way to Kodaikanal

Oddanchatram is not only a destination in its own right; it is also one of the roads into Kodaikanal, roughly 95 km further via Palani — a route that climbs through Pachalur, Thandikudi and Perumalmalai rather than the more heavily used Kodai Road ghat from Madurai. Some of our bookings on this corridor are passengers using Oddanchatram as a convenient overnight stop before continuing up to the hill station the next morning, which splits what would otherwise be a very long single day from Bangalore into two manageable legs.
