Bangalore to Thanjavur Taxi — 390 km to the Great Chola Capital
At 390 km and about 7 hours, this route runs south from Bangalore down NH44 to Salem, then through Namakkal and Trichy into the Cauvery delta and Thanjavur, home to the Brihadeeswara temple.
The road south and east
You take the Hosur road, drive the divided highway through Krishnagiri and Salem, reach Trichy, and finally turn east into the delta, where paddy fields and coconut groves line the last hour.
A temple that still astonishes
The Brihadeeswara temple, completed around 1010 CE under Rajaraja Chola, has a 66-metre tower topped by a single granite capstone, and the temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site together with two other Chola temples nearby.
Vehicle choice
A sedan works for small groups; an SUV is better for families and tour groups on a seven-hour drive.
Booking
Round trips suit a two-day visit covering the palace and nearby Chola temples.
Crafts, manuscripts and food
Thanjavur is famous for its gilded, gem-set paintings, bell-metal ware and veena makers, and nearby Swamimalai is known for Chola-style bronze casting. The Saraswathi Mahal Library holds a huge collection of manuscripts, and the Maratha Palace has a bronzes gallery. The temple is best seen early morning or late afternoon, when the granite is cooler. Delta food and filter coffee are easy to find near the temple.
Good to know
Thanjavur's arts hold several protected geographical indications, including its paintings, dolls, art plates and veena, so shopping here has real local craftsmanship behind it, and small workshops near the temple welcome visitors. The Thanjavur doll, a round-bottomed figure that rocks back upright, is a popular souvenir, and veena makers in the town still build the instrument by hand. Evening light on the granite temple tower is a highlight, and the surrounding streets stay lively until late.
Before you travel
Dress modestly for the temple and check the visiting hours, which include a midday break. Book a room in advance for weekends and festival dates, and tell us if you want to add Darasuram or Gangaikonda Cholapuram so the driver can plan the second day.
Where to stop on the way
Krishnagiri, Salem and Trichy are the natural breaks, with Trichy about an hour before Thanjavur, and a good place for lunch.
What the fare includes
The quoted fare covers the vehicle, driver, fuel and driver bata for the full 390 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and all of them are listed before you book. A round trip adds the driver's daily bata for time spent away from home, and the full breakdown is shown before you confirm the booking.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are always clear before you confirm.
