Chennai Airport to Tirupati Taxi — From Your Flight to the Foot of Tirumala
A great many pilgrims to Sri Venkateswara never set foot in Chennai city. They fly in — from the Gulf, from Singapore and Malaysia, from the US, or from Delhi and Mumbai — because Chennai has far more flights than the smaller airport near Tirupati, and then go straight from the arrivals hall to the hills. The road distance from Chennai airport is 146 km, about 2 to 3 hours, and it crosses from Tamil Nadu into Andhra Pradesh on the way. Here is how that transfer works, and how to fit it around a flight and a darshan booking.
Meeting you at arrivals
When you book, send the flight number. You will have the driver’s name, photograph and car number before you land. We watch the actual arrival time, so an early landing or a late one simply shifts the pickup, and a delay that is not of your making costs you nothing extra.
After touchdown the driver phones or WhatsApps you and waits at the arrivals pickup point with your name on a board. If you are coming in from abroad, immigration and baggage come first; the driver knows this and will wait. Airport entry or parking fees for the car are paid at actuals, along with the tolls.
Heading west, not into the city
The airport is at Meenambakkam on GST Road, on Chennai’s south side, and Tirupati lies to the north-west. So the car does not go through the centre. It works west and north through the suburbs — along the Chennai bypass or by way of Poonamallee — and then takes the road out through Tiruvallur towards Tiruttani. Past Tiruttani the road enters Andhra Pradesh and runs through Puttur and Renigunta into Tirupati. At night this is a straightforward drive; in the evening rush, the first hour getting clear of Chennai’s western suburbs is the slow part.
Because the trip crosses a state border, the taxi needs an inter-state permit for Andhra Pradesh. That permit is paid at actuals and listed separately from the fare, in the same way as tolls.
Do not set your darshan slot too close to the landing
The single most common mistake on this route is a darshan booking that leaves no room for the flight. Planes are late, immigration queues on a busy night can be long, and a passenger who has been travelling for twenty hours needs a bath and a few hours of sleep before standing in a temple queue. Our advice is to land, drive to Tirupati, rest, and take darshan the following day, or at the very least later on the day you land. If you are booking darshan through the TTD website, choose the date with that margin in mind.
Keep the ID you used for the darshan booking in your cabin bag, not in the suitcase in the boot. Travellers from abroad should keep their passport within reach as well.
The luggage problem nobody mentions
Arriving from overseas means suitcases, and suitcases do not go up the footpath at Alipiri. If you intend to climb, go to your lodging in Tirupati first, leave the bags, change into traditional clothes, and start the walk from there. Most of our airport drops on this route are therefore to a hotel or a TTD rest house in the town rather than straight to the steps.
For space: a sedan carries two large suitcases plus cabin bags, an SUV three, and an Innova four. A family returning from abroad with a suitcase each, plus elders who need legroom after the flight, should usually book the Innova.
Night landings and pre-dawn arrivals
A flight landing at midnight puts you in Tirupati at around three in the morning, which suits pilgrims well — the town is already awake at that hour for the early darshan crowds. The night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM is paid at actuals. If your hotel does not allow check-in until midday, ask them in advance about an early room; arriving at 3 AM with no room to go to is hard on elders.
On festival dates, particularly Brahmotsavam and the Saturdays of Purattasi, Tirupati fills up and the approach roads slow down. If your flight lands in that season, give yourself a full day of slack.
Coming back to catch a flight
The return to Chennai airport for your flight home is a separate booking, or a round trip if you want the same car to wait. Darshan times are hard to predict, so leave Tirupati with a generous margin: allow the full 3 hours for the road, then the time your airline asks you to report before departure, and then some extra for the western suburbs of Chennai.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 146 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are clear before you confirm.
