Chennai to Krishnagiri Taxi — 250 km to the Mango District and Highway Junction
Krishnagiri is where two of Tamil Nadu's great highways meet: NH48 coming in from Chennai and NH44 running between Bangalore and Salem. At 250 km and roughly four and a half hours from Chennai, it is a district headquarters, a mango capital and, for many travellers, the junction from which they head on to Dharmapuri, Hogenakkal or Tiruvannamalai.
Mango country
Krishnagiri district is one of the largest mango-growing areas in Tamil Nadu, and in May and June the roadside stalls around Krishnagiri, Kaveripattinam and Bargur are heaped with Alphonso, Banganapalli, Totapuri and Neelum. Much of the crop goes to the pulp factories around the town, and a mango exhibition is usually held during the season. If you are travelling then, leave room in the boot for a box or two.
How you get there
The route is almost entirely NH48: out through Poonamallee and Sriperumbudur, across the Palar plains to Vellore, then west through Ambur and Vaniyambadi with low hills on either side. Past Natrampalli and Bargur you reach Krishnagiri town, which sits beneath a rocky hill. The road is a divided highway throughout, so driving after dark is straightforward.
The reservoir and the hill fort
The Krishnagiri Reservoir dam on the Thenpennai, about 10 km from town, is a popular evening outing with a park below the bund. The rock hill above the town, often called Syed Basha Malai, carries the remains of a fort from the Mysore wars era, and Rayakottai, another hill fort not far away, fell to the British during the Anglo-Mysore wars. The district also has megalithic dolmens at Mallachandram for anyone interested in early history.
Who travels to Krishnagiri
Government staff posted at the collectorate, mango growers and pulp buyers, families from the district who live in Chennai, and travellers who use the town as a stepping stone further west. Some come by overnight bus and find the arrival time awkward; a car lets you leave when it suits you and arrive at the door.
Pickup in Chennai
We collect from Koyambedu, the Kilambakkam bus terminus, Chennai Central and Egmore, the airport, and homes in Mogappair, Ashok Nagar, Avadi or anywhere else in the city. Western suburbs are closest to the highway, so a pickup from Avadi or Poonamallee saves the most time.
Going further from Krishnagiri
Hogenakkal Falls on the Cauvery is roughly two hours beyond, by way of Palacode or Dharmapuri, and coracle rides there are the main attraction. Tiruvannamalai lies to the south-east and Dharmapuri to the south. Hosur and the Bangalore border are about an hour to the north-west. Tell us at booking if you want to continue, and it is priced as one trip.
Car choice and breaks
A sedan suits up to four with normal luggage; an SUV is worth it in mango season or for a family of six. Vellore and Vaniyambadi are the usual halts, roughly a third and two thirds of the way.
What the fare includes
The quoted fare covers the vehicle, driver, fuel and driver bata for the full 250 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and all of them are listed before you book. A round trip adds the driver's daily bata for time spent away from home, and the full breakdown is shown before you confirm the booking.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Tolls, parking, any state permit and the night allowance are paid at actuals, and nothing else is added.
