Chennai to Palani Taxi — 460 km to Murugan's Hill Temple
At 460 km and about 8 hours, this is a long overnight-friendly drive from Chennai to Palani, home to the Dandayuthapani Swamy temple, one of the six sacred abodes of Murugan and among the busiest temples in the state.
The road southwest
The route follows the Chennai to Trichy highway through Villupuram and Perambalur, then turns west through Dindigul to Palani, mostly on four-lane national highway.
Timing the darshan
Most pilgrims leave Chennai around 9 or 10 pm and arrive near dawn, which puts them in the queue before the morning crowds, and the winch and rope car both start early. Weekends, Thaipusam and school holidays are much busier, and a ticketed queue is available at extra cost.
Vehicle choice
An SUV is more comfortable for eight hours on the road, especially for families with elders.
Booking
Round trips are the norm, with a night in Palani, and one-way drops suit those continuing on to Kodaikanal or Coimbatore.
The temple and its offerings
The temple stands on a hill reached by steps, a winch train or a rope car, and the deity is Murugan as an ascetic carrying a staff. The panchamirtham, a sweet made from five ingredients, carries a protected geographical indication and is the offering pilgrims take home. Many devotees have their heads shaved as an offering at a tonsure hall near the hill, and shaving facilities are available. Panguni Uthiram and Thaipusam draw enormous crowds, with walking pilgrims arriving from across the state, so roads in Palani town can be congested in those weeks. The climb takes roughly an hour on foot, and the winch takes only a few minutes but has its own queue.
Before you travel
Wear light footwear you can remove easily, carry water, and note that phones and cameras may be restricted inside. Book a room near the hill in advance for festival weekends, and agree a pickup time with your driver, since darshan can take longer than expected. If you plan to continue to Kodaikanal, tell us at booking so it is one fare.
Where to stop on the way
Villupuram and Perambalur have busy highway restaurants for a late dinner, and Dindigul, about an hour from Palani, is known for its biryani and is the best place for a break in the small hours.
What the fare includes
The quoted fare covers the vehicle, driver, fuel and driver bata for the full 460 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and all of them are listed before you book. A round trip adds the driver's daily bata for time spent away from home, and the full breakdown is shown before you confirm the booking.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are always clear before you confirm.
