Salem to Palani distance and route
Salem to Palani is 178 Kms by road and takes 3–4 Hours. The drive goes south from Salem through Karur, continues towards Dindigul, and turns west onto NH83 — the Dindigul–Oddanchatram–Palani– Udumalpet road — for the last stretch into the temple town. It is straightforward driving with no ghat section; the Palani hills only appear at the very end, and the road stays on the plain below them.
Most of the length is good highway. The section that governs the timing is the Oddanchatram stretch, which runs through one of the biggest vegetable markets in Tamil Nadu and carries lorry traffic at odd hours, so an overnight run is often quicker than a mid-morning one despite covering the same road.
Why people make this journey
Palani is not a business town. Almost every booking on this corridor is going to the Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy temple on the hill — the third of Murugan's six abodes, the Arupadai Veedu, and the one where he is worshipped as the ascetic who gave up everything and stands on the summit with only a staff.
That shapes how the trips run. They cluster around festival dates, they very often leave at night to reach the hill for an early darshan, and they frequently continue somewhere else afterwards rather than returning to Salem. A one-way drop suits all three patterns, because you are paying for the 178 Kms you travel rather than for a car to sit in Palani waiting or drive back empty.
Getting up the hill
The temple is on a hill and there are four ways up, which is the single most useful thing to know before you arrive. The stepped route has somewhere close to 700 steps — you will see 650, 670 and 693 quoted, because there are two stepped paths and people count them differently — and takes most people around half an hour. The elephant path is a longer, gently sloping road for those who would rather walk than climb.
For anyone who cannot manage either, there is a winch, a 36-seat cable-hauled car covering roughly 290 metres from the base station in about eight minutes, and a faster rope car covering about 323 metres in a few minutes. Both run from early morning until night, and both start earlier on festival days. Drivers drop at the base and wait in the parking area below; cars do not go up.
If someone in your group has difficulty walking, say so at booking. It does not change the fare, but it changes where the driver sets you down and it means you are pointed at the winch queue rather than the steps.
Thaipusam, and travelling around it
Thaipusam is the big one here. It falls on the Pusam star in the Tamil month of Thai, which puts it in late January or February depending on the year — in 2027 it comes in late January. Palani holds a ten-day Brahmotsavam around it and the town fills completely: lakhs of devotees, kavadis, milk pots, and a temple that runs its winches from before dawn.
Two things follow for anyone driving. Book well ahead, because cars are hard to get on those dates from any operator. And expect the last stretch into town to be diverted — traffic arrangements around Palani change during the festival and the usual drop point is often moved further out. Tell us you are travelling for Thaipusam and the driver plans the approach in advance instead of discovering it at a barricade.
Padayatra pilgrims on the road
Something specific to this corridor: in the weeks before Thaipusam and during Panguni Uthiram, large numbers of pilgrims walk to Palani, many of them along the very roads this route uses. They walk at night and in the early morning to avoid the heat, in groups, often barefoot and carrying kavadis, and they are on the shoulder rather than well off it.
Our drivers slow considerably through those stretches, and we would rather quote a longer running time in that season than pretend the drive takes as long as it does in June. If you are travelling in festival weeks, build the extra time into your plan.
Panchamirtham and what people carry home
Palani panchamirtham is the prasadam almost everyone returns with. It is made from five ingredients — banana, jaggery, cow ghee, honey and cardamom, with dates and sugar candy added — and no water, preservatives or chemical processing at any stage. The banana is a specific one: the Virupakshi hill banana grown in the Palani hills, which holds less moisture and is what allows the panchamirtham to keep without refrigeration.
It received a GI tag in 2019, the first temple prasadam in Tamil Nadu to be given one. Buy it from the Devasthanam counters rather than the stalls on the approach road, and tell the driver you want to stop for it before leaving town rather than after.
Combining Palani with what is nearby
Very few people drive to Palani and straight back to Salem. Kodaikanal is roughly two hours away up the ghat from Palani and is the most common continuation. Dindigul is on the way back with its fort and its lock-making trade, Madurai is about two and a half hours south-east, and Coimbatore is a couple of hours west along NH83 through Udumalpet and Pollachi.
Any of those can be booked as one multi-stop trip rather than as separate journeys, which keeps one driver for the whole circuit and costs less than booking each leg on its own. If the plan is Salem–Palani–Kodaikanal or Salem–Palani–Madurai, give us the whole itinerary at booking and we quote the circuit.
Fares, tolls and timing
A drop taxi means you pay one-way distance only, with tolls and any permit as actuals in the fare and nothing added after the trip. One driver stays with you the entire way, including on a night run.
For timing: leaving Salem around 3 am puts you at the base of the hill for the early morning, which is both the coolest part of the day and the shortest queue. Between March and June the climb in the middle of the day is genuinely hard work, so an early start is worth more here than on most routes. October to February is the pleasant season, though it is also when the festival crowds come.
