Coimbatore to Kodaikanal Taxi — 175 km Up the Western Route
At 175 km and about 5 hours, this route runs southeast from Coimbatore through Pollachi and Udumalpet to Palani, then climbs the Palani hills to Kodaikanal, arriving from the west side of the plateau.
The road to the hills
The first half is easy plains driving through coconut country and a wind-farm belt, and the second half is the ghat road from Palani, a narrow climb through forest with hairpin bends and steady cooling of the air.
A hill station with lakes, rocks and mist
Kodaikanal's star-shaped lake is the centre of town, with Pillar Rocks, Coaker's Walk and Bryant Park nearby, and Berijam Lake, a forest-department reserve that needs a permit from the local office, is a quieter drive out of town.
Vehicle choice
An SUV copes better with the ghat and gives more luggage room; a sedan is fine for a light party.
Booking
One-way drops suit visitors who return by a different route; round trips work for a two-night stay.
Making the most of the trip
Because the route passes Palani, many travellers visit the Murugan temple on the way up, which adds about two hours. Mist is common in the afternoons and in the wet months, so morning is the best time for viewpoints. Homemade chocolate and eucalyptus oil are typical takeaways, and evenings turn cold even in summer. Kodaikanal is crowded in April, May and around Christmas, and rooms fill early.
Good to know
Beyond the lake, popular viewpoints include Dolphin's Nose, a rock ledge over a steep drop, and Green Valley View, and Silver Cascade sits on the road into town. The Kurinji Andavar temple honours the kurinji flower, which blooms across the hills only once every twelve years, and the annual flower show in May draws crowds to Bryant Park. Weekends and holidays are crowded, and traffic in the small town centre slows to a crawl in the afternoon.
Before you travel
Book a hotel in advance for holiday weeks, carry a light jacket, and start early enough to finish the ghat in daylight. Tell us if you want a Palani temple stop, and download offline maps, since signal drops on the hill road.
Where to stop on the way
Pollachi has a wide range of restaurants, and Palani, at the foot of the ghat, is the natural break for tea or a meal before the climb.
What the fare includes
The quoted fare covers the vehicle, driver, fuel and driver bata for the full 175 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and all of them are listed before you book. A round trip adds the driver's daily bata for time spent away from home, and the full breakdown is shown before you confirm the booking.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are always clear before you confirm.
