Erode to Kanchipuram Taxi — 319 km from the Turmeric City to the Silk City
Erode and Kanchipuram are both cloth towns, and the 319 km between them sees a steady stream of families and traders. A one-way taxi covers the distance in 5 to 6 hours. Some riders are going for darshan at Kanchipuram’s temples, many are buying silk sarees for a wedding, and others work in the textile business on either end. Whatever the reason, a car with the same driver for the day means you can shop, visit temples and carry your purchases without worrying about a train or bus timetable.
Where the trip begins
Our drivers pick up from homes across Erode city, from the Erode Junction railway station and the central bus stand, and from the turmeric market and textile areas. We also start trips from Perundurai, Bhavani, Kumarapalayam, Gobichettipalayam and the handloom town of Chennimalai. If you are flying into Coimbatore and want to go straight to Kanchipuram, the trip can begin at the airport there, though that adds distance before Erode.
How the drive goes
The car leaves Erode on NH 544 for Salem, going past Bhavani and Sankagiri. After Salem it turns north-east, and the usual line follows the highway past Krishnagiri and Vellore towards Chennai, turning off near Walajapet for Kanchipuram. Depending on traffic and time of day, a driver may prefer a more inland road through the Tiruvannamalai side; both get you there, and your driver will pick whichever is moving better that day. Most of the distance is on divided highway.
A mid-morning stop around Salem works well for breakfast or tea, and Vellore, with its old fort beside the road, is a good place to stretch your legs before the final hour.
Timing your arrival around the temples
Kanchipuram’s big temples, like most in Tamil Nadu, open early, close for a few hours in the afternoon, and reopen in the evening. If darshan is the main purpose, leave Erode by 5 or 6 AM to reach before the midday closing, or start after breakfast and plan for the evening opening, with shopping in between. Silk showrooms stay open through the day, so the afternoon gap is the natural time to buy sarees.
Temples you can reach in a day
Kanchipuram is often called the city of a thousand temples, and a car makes it possible to see the main ones in a single visit:
- Ekambareswarar Temple, the great Shiva temple with its towering gopuram and an ancient mango tree in the courtyard.
- Kamakshi Amman Temple, at the heart of the old town, and the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham nearby.
- Varadharaja Perumal Temple, home of the Athi Varadar idol that is brought out for darshan only once every forty years.
- Kailasanathar Temple, a quieter Pallava-era sandstone temple on the western edge of the town, much admired for its carvings.
The temples are spread across the town, so having the car wait outside each one saves a lot of time and walking in the heat. Kanchipuram’s kovil idli, steamed with pepper and cumin, is worth trying at a local eatery.
Shopping for silk
Gandhi Road and the streets around it are lined with silk showrooms, and weavers’ cooperative societies sell directly as well. Buyers from the Kongu region tend to know their cloth, but it is still worth looking for the Silk Mark label and asking about the zari. Your driver can wait while you shop and then take the bundles back to the car. Many wedding parties book a round trip so the same car brings them home with their purchases.
Festival months in Kanchipuram
The town gets very crowded during the Brahmotsavam at Varadharaja Perumal Temple in Vaikasi (May–June), especially on the Garuda Sevai day; during Panguni Uthiram at Ekambareswarar (March–April); and through Navaratri at the Kamakshi Temple in Purattasi–Aippasi (September–October). The wedding season peaks in the auspicious months, when silk shops are at their busiest. On these days, book a little ahead and expect traffic near the temples.
Rail or road?
Erode Junction has excellent train connections to Chennai, but Kanchipuram sits on a branch line with relatively few trains, so most rail journeys mean changing at Katpadi, Arakkonam or Chengalpattu and then taking a bus or auto. A taxi saves that change and gives you the car for the day in Kanchipuram, which matters once you have bags of sarees.
Charges on top of the fare
The fare table shows the car, driver, fuel and driver bata. Tolls on the Salem and Vellore stretches and parking near the temples are extra, paid at actuals, as is the night allowance if any driving falls between 10 PM and 6 AM. The route stays within Tamil Nadu and has no ghat road, so there is no permit or hill charge.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 319 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
