Erode to Villupuram Taxi — 240 km Across the Middle of Tamil Nadu
Erode to Villupuram is about 240 km by road, a drive of 4–5 hours that takes you from the turmeric and textile country of the Kongu belt to the junction town of the old South Arcot region. Most people who book this run are going home: families who work in the Erode and Perundurai mills and belong to Villupuram, Kallakurichi or the villages around Thirukovilur, students heading back after a term, and relatives travelling for a wedding, a funeral or a hospital visit. A one-way drop means you pay for one direction only, and the driver does not wait unless you ask for a round trip.
How the road runs
The usual line leaves Erode towards Bhavani and Sankagiri, where the old hill fort stands beside the highway, and reaches Salem in a little over an hour. From Salem the road turns east through Valapady, Attur and Thalaivasal, crosses into Kallakurichi district past Chinnasalem, and joins the busy Chennai–Trichy corridor at Ulundurpet. The last stretch north from Ulundurpet to Villupuram is four-lane and quick.
The Salem–Attur–Ulundurpet stretch is mostly two-lane through farm country, with tapioca, sugarcane and maize fields on both sides, so it moves at an easy pace rather than a fast one. Your driver may choose a different line if there is roadwork or a temple crowd somewhere, for example cutting across from Kallakurichi towards Thirukovilur. Tell us at booking if you would like to go through a particular town.
Picking you up in Erode
We collect from anywhere in and around the city: homes in Perundurai Road, Brough Road, Surampatti, Veerappanchatram and Thindal, hotels near the central bus stand, and Erode Junction railway station for passengers coming off an overnight train. Pickups from Bhavani, Chithode, Perundurai, Gobichettipalayam and Kodumudi are easy to arrange, and the driver will go to the house rather than a main road. If you are flying in, Coimbatore airport is the nearest, and we can start the trip there instead.
Where people get dropped in Villupuram
Common drops are Villupuram Junction railway station, the new bus stand, the collectorate and court area, the government medical college hospital at Mundiyampakkam, and residential streets around the town. Many trips go a little beyond Villupuram itself, to Thirukovilur, Gingee, Vikravandi, Tindivanam or a village off the Panruti road. Give us the final address; the car takes you to the gate, not to the edge of town.
When to set off
Leaving Erode between 5 and 6 in the morning puts you through Salem before office traffic builds and gets you to Villupuram before lunch. An afternoon start works well too, since you arrive by early evening. Late-night trips are possible at any hour, but note that driving between 10 PM and 6 AM carries a night allowance, paid at actuals along with tolls and parking.
Festival travel: Deepavali and Pongal
The two biggest going-home weekends on this road are Deepavali, which falls in Aippasi (October or November), and Pongal in mid-January at the start of Thai. Mill and factory workers from Erode all head east together, buses from Salem fill up days ahead, and cars on the Attur road run nose to tail on the eve of the festival. Book your taxi a week or more in advance for these dates and keep a little extra time in hand.
Villupuram district also draws crowds in Chithirai (April–May) for the Koothandavar festival at Koovagam, which brings visitors from across the state. If your drop is near Ulundurpet during that week, expect slow traffic on the village roads.
Stopping on the way
Salem is a natural tea stop about an hour out, and Attur is roughly the halfway mark, with plenty of eateries along the highway serving idli, dosa and meals. In the mango season, roughly April to June, roadside stalls around Salem sell the local varieties, and families often pick up a box to carry home. Ulundurpet has large highway food courts on the Trichy road if you would rather stop near the end. Ask the driver to pause whenever you need to; elders and children travel better with a break every couple of hours.
Taxi, bus or train?
Government buses connect Erode to Salem often, and Salem to Villupuram via Attur and Ulundurpet, but it usually means a change and a crowded seat at festival time. Direct trains between the two towns are few, and the timings rarely suit a family with luggage. A taxi costs more than a single bus ticket, but for three or four people with bags, or for someone unwell, the door-to-door trip without a change at Salem is worth it.
Choosing the car
A sedan seats four with a couple of medium suitcases. If you are carrying festival shopping, a rice bag or a TV box home, take an SUV such as an Ertiga or Marazzo, which seats seven. The Innova Crysta is the comfortable choice for elders on a long day. Larger family groups can ask about a Tempo Traveller. Every car is air-conditioned and the same driver stays with you from Erode to Villupuram.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 240 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road.
