Erode to Velankanni Taxi — 286 km Across the Kaveri Delta to the Basilica
From Erode to Velankanni is about 286 km, usually 5–6 hours on the road. The trip follows the Kaveri almost all the way, from the turmeric and textile town in the west to the shrine of Our Lady of Good Health on the Bay of Bengal. Most bookings we get on this pair are pilgrimages: parish groups, families completing a vow made during an illness or an exam year, and couples bringing a newborn for blessing. Plenty of Hindu and Muslim families make the journey too, often combining it with Nagore and Thanjavur.
Leaving from Erode town
Erode is known across India for its turmeric trade and its cloth markets, and that is where many of our pickups begin: houses and godowns in the old town, the streets around the turmeric yards, and homes near the textile markets. We also collect from Erode Junction railway station, the central bus stand and residential areas such as Surampatti, Veerappanchatram and Chithode. Relatives arriving by air can be picked up at Coimbatore airport and brought through Erode on the way. If your group is coming in from Bhavani or Kumarapalayam, we can start there instead.
For a church or family group of seven, an SUV or Innova Crysta takes everyone together. Larger parishes can ask us about a Tempo Traveller.
The road through the delta
The taxi heads east to Karur, either along the river road past Kodumudi or by the inland road, then follows the Kaveri through Kulithalai to Tiruchirappalli. From Tiruchi the road runs to Thanjavur, then across the flat green delta through Thiruvarur to Nagapattinam, and the last short stretch goes south along the coast to Velankanni. Once you cross Tiruchi the land changes: paddy fields, coconut groves, irrigation channels and temple towns every few kilometres.
Natural places to stop are Karur, the outskirts of Tiruchi for breakfast or lunch, and Thanjavur. If you have an extra hour, the Brihadeeswarar temple at Thanjavur is right on the way and well worth a halt. Tolls on this route, parking and any night driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra and paid at actuals.
When to start
Leaving Erode around 5 AM gets you to Velankanni by late morning, in time to settle into a lodge and attend an afternoon or evening Mass. A night departure is also common for groups who want to be at the basilica for the first Mass of the morning; in that case the night allowance applies for the hours between 10 PM and 6 AM. During feast days and long weekends, start earlier, since the last few kilometres into Velankanni slow to a crawl.
Feast days and busy seasons
The annual feast is the biggest event of the year: the flag is hoisted on 29 August and the celebrations run to 8 September, the feast of the Nativity of Our Lady. Lakhs of pilgrims come in those ten days, many of them walking long distances. Christmas, the New Year, Holy Week and Easter are also very crowded, and Saturdays are busier than the rest of the week. If you can travel outside these dates, darshan is calmer and lodging easier to find.
The coast here receives the northeast monsoon between October and December, sometimes with cyclone warnings. We watch the forecasts and will tell you if a day looks unsafe.
At Velankanni and around
We drop you at the basilica, at your lodge or church guest house, or at Velankanni railway station if someone is continuing by train. Pilgrims usually visit the main basilica, Our Lady’s Tank, where the first apparition is believed to have taken place, the Morning Star Church, and the offerings museum, before walking down to the beach. The procession of the decorated chariot during the feast is the most crowded moment of the year.
Nearby, Nagore Dargah is a short drive north beyond Nagapattinam, and the Sikkal Singaravelar temple is close to Nagapattinam on the Thiruvarur side. Many Erode families add one or both, and on a round trip the driver can fit them in on the way back.
Car, bus or train from Erode?
Velankanni has a railway station, but trains from western Tamil Nadu are few and fill quickly in feast season. Buses usually mean changing at Tiruchi or Nagapattinam with bags, children and elders. A taxi lets the group leave from home, stop when someone needs to, and arrive at the lodge door. For a single pilgrim travelling light, the bus is the cheaper option; for a family or a parish group, a car usually works out simpler.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 286 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
