Kanyakumari to Velankanni Taxi — a 459 km Pilgrimage Drive to the Basilica
Velankanni is about 459 km from Kanyakumari, an 8–9 hour drive across almost the whole length of Tamil Nadu, from the southern tip to the Nagapattinam coast. Kanyakumari district has a large Catholic population, and many families from its parishes travel to the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health to fulfil a vow, for a baptism or an anniversary, or for the September feast. Tourists also come up from the Cape after sightseeing. A one-way drop taxi means you are not paying for the car to wait while you stay on for prayers.
The Velankanni calendar
The biggest crowd of the year comes for the annual feast, which begins with the flag hoisting on 29 August and ends on 8 September, the feast of the Nativity of Mary. In the days before, you will see groups walking to Velankanni along the roads of the delta. Christmas, New Year, Holy Week and Easter are also very busy, as are weekends through the school holidays in April and May. If you travel during the feast, book your room well ahead and expect slow traffic near the shrine. Quieter weekdays outside these periods make for an easier visit, especially with elderly family members.
Choosing your road
The usual route is inland. You head north on the national highway through Tirunelveli and Virudhunagar to Madurai, cross to Thanjavur, either by Tiruchirappalli or the Pudukkottai side, and then run east through Thiruvarur to the coast. It is the most predictable road, with good places to eat, and it lets you stop at the Big Temple in Thanjavur if you have time.
Some families ask for the coastal route instead: up past Tiruchendur, Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram, then north along the East Coast Road through the fishing towns to Velankanni. It suits people who want darshan at the Tiruchendur Murugan temple or who prefer the sea view, but the roads are narrower and the drive usually takes longer than the inland route. Mention it at booking so the driver can plan the day around it.
Pickup in Kanyakumari and Nagercoil
Many pilgrims start from home rather than a hotel, so we come to the house in Kanyakumari town, Nagercoil or the villages around them. For visitors, the car can meet you at your lodge near the shore and the Our Lady of Ransom Church, at the hotels on the sunrise side of the town, at Kanyakumari railway station or at the bus stand. If you are arriving by air, Thiruvananthapuram is the closest airport; since that pickup is in Kerala, the distance changes and an inter-state permit applies, paid at actuals.
Setting off and arriving
An 8–9 hour drive is long, and most families prefer to arrive in daylight to settle into their room before the evening Mass or the candlelight at the shrine. Leaving Kanyakumari around 5:30 to 6 AM gets you there by mid-afternoon. Starting earlier is fine, but a night allowance is charged for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM, at actuals. Tolls and parking are extra too, paid as you go. A late start puts the delta stretch after dark, when the smaller roads past Thiruvarur are slower.
The right car for a pilgrim family
A sedan is comfortable for up to four adults with a couple of bags. For grandparents, children and luggage for a three-day stay, an SUV such as an Ertiga or Marazzo gives more legroom and a proper boot, and the Innova Crysta is the most comfortable over nine hours. Parishes and larger family groups can ask about a Tempo Traveller. All our cars are air-conditioned, and the same driver stays with you the whole way, which matters when elders need frequent breaks.
Where the drop is in Velankanni
Most drops are at a lodge or hotel close to the Basilica, along the road between the main shrine, the Morning Star Church and Our Lady’s Tank, or near the beach. We also drop at Velankanni railway station, and at Nagapattinam, about 12 km away, if you are staying there. From Nagapattinam, the Nagore Dargah is a short drive further north, and many visitors see both. The Kanduri festival at Nagore follows the Islamic calendar, so its dates move each year.
Train, bus or taxi
Velankanni does have a railway station, but trains from the far south are limited, and most journeys need at least one change. Long-distance buses are cheap, but with the change at Madurai or Thanjavur and the crowds near the feast, they are hard work with elders or heavy bags. A taxi lets you leave from your doorstep, stop when you need to, and arrive close to the shrine.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 459 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are clear before you confirm.
