Cuddalore to Velankanni Taxi — 140 km Down the Coast to the Basilica
Velankanni is 140 km south of Cuddalore, and a one-way drop taxi covers it in 2–3 hours. That makes it one of the shortest outstation runs from the district: you can leave after breakfast, attend a Mass or light candles at the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health before noon, and the car is free to go. Most people who book this pair are families going for a vow, a child’s first tonsure, a wedding anniversary prayer or the annual feast, and a fair number are Hindu and Muslim households for whom Velankanni is part of a wider coastal circuit with Nagore and Sikkal.
Starting from your side of Cuddalore
Because the trip heads south, the driver is already pointed the right way from most of the town. If you live in the Old Town or near the port, he simply leaves along the road towards Chidambaram. From Thirupapuliyur (New Town) or Manjakuppam, near the Collectorate, he crosses back through the centre first, which adds a few minutes on a weekday morning. Staff staying near the SIPCOT industrial estate south of town are on the outbound road itself, so that pickup is quick.
Relatives arriving by train can be met at Cuddalore Port Junction or Thirupapuliyur station and driven straight on, and we also collect from the main bus stand or from guest houses near Silver Beach. If you are coming from Neyveli, a pickup there can be arranged on the same booking.
How the road runs
The first stretch is the busy coastal highway to Chidambaram, about an hour away, where the Nataraja temple sits right beside the route. After Chidambaram the road crosses the Kollidam (Coleroon) river and continues to Sirkazhi. From there drivers take one of two lines. The coastal line goes past Tharangambadi (the old Danish settlement of Tranquebar) and Karaikal, then through Nagore into Nagapattinam, with Velankanni a short drive further south. The inland line goes through Mayiladuthurai and towards Thiruvarur before turning to the coast. The driver chooses on the day according to road work and traffic; neither changes the trip much, and the time stays within the 2–3 hours you were quoted.
Detours that fit easily: Pichavaram mangrove boating near Chidambaram (an extra hour or two with the boat ride), Vaitheeswaran Koil near Sirkazhi on the Mayiladuthurai road, the Nagore Dargah just before Nagapattinam, and the Sikkal Singaravelar temple a little inland from Nagapattinam. Tell us while booking so the driver plans the order.
The feast, Christmas and the crowded weeks
The big event is the annual feast, which begins with the flag hoisting on 29 August and runs to 8 September, the feast of Mary’s nativity (Aavani–Purattasi in the Tamil calendar). In the days before the flag goes up you will pass groups walking to Velankanni on foot along the coastal road, many in saffron or yellow, and our drivers slow down for them. During the feast the town fills completely, police close the streets around the basilica to cars, and lodging needs to be booked well ahead.
Christmas, the New Year night, Holy Week and Easter, and the long weekends of May are the next busiest times. Saturdays and the first Saturday of the month bring extra pilgrims too. If you want a quieter visit, a weekday morning outside these dates is the easiest.
The northeast monsoon reaches this coast from October to December. Heavy rain can slow the coastal line, and if a cyclone warning is up the driver may suggest the inland routing or a later start.
Where the car drops you in Velankanni
Usual drop points are the basilica forecourt (as close as traffic allows), the shrine office if you have arranged a Mass intention, the Morning Star church, or your lodge along the beach road or the streets behind the basilica. Velankanni also has its own railway station if you are continuing by train, and Nagapattinam station is close by.
On feast days the car will stop at the edge of the restricted zone and you walk the last part, so pack a small bag you can carry. Modest clothing is expected inside the basilica, and footwear is left outside in some of the shrine areas.
Taxi, bus or train for this trip
Buses are frequent on the Cuddalore–Chidambaram–Nagapattinam line, and for a single traveller with light luggage they work well, usually with a change at Nagapattinam for Velankanni. Direct trains from Cuddalore are few, and during the feast the railways typically add special services that fill fast. A taxi makes most sense for families with elders, for anyone carrying offerings or a baby for tonsure, and for those combining Nagore and Sikkal in one day. A sedan seats four comfortably; an Ertiga-class SUV or Innova Crysta suits six or seven, and larger parish groups can ask about a Tempo Traveller.
Practical notes
Tolls, parking near the basilica and any night allowance if you drive between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra and paid at actuals, on top of the fare shown in the table above. If you plan to come back the same evening, ask for a round trip instead of two one-way drops; the driver waits while you finish your prayers. Carry drinking water in summer, as the coastal heat from April to June is strong by late morning.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 140 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are clear before you confirm.
