Neyveli to Salem Taxi — 150 km West Through Attur, About 2–3 Hours
Salem lies about 150 km west of Neyveli, a drive of 2 to 3 hours. It is a practical, working trip more often than a holiday: business with Salem’s textile and sago trade, visits to its hospitals, college admissions, and catching a train at Salem Junction, which has far more long-distance services than Neyveli’s small station. Some travellers continue up to Yercaud, the hill station above Salem. Since the distance is short, a one-way drop gets you there by mid-morning and the car turns back.
From the mines to the Salem highway
The car leaves Neyveli westward through Virudhachalam, then heads across country to meet the Salem highway around Kallakurichi or Chinnasalem. Depending on road conditions the driver may instead join it near Ulundurpet. From there the road runs through Attur and Vazhapadi into Salem, with low hills rising on either side as you go west. It is mostly an easy two-lane and four-lane road, with little of the city-traffic grind you get on longer routes.
Where the driver finds you
In the township, a block number and quarters number are all the driver needs; NLC families tend to give the nearest landmark too, and that helps at night. Contractors staying in rented houses outside the township, or relatives in Panruti, Vadalur or Cuddalore, can all be picked up from their door. Virudhachalam is right on the way, so someone joining from there costs almost no extra time.
Catching a train at Salem Junction
One of the most common reasons for this booking is a long-distance train. Salem Junction has services towards Kerala, Bangalore and the north that are not convenient from Neyveli. Tell us the train number and departure time, and we will set the pickup so you reach the station with a comfortable margin. The same works in reverse: if you arrive at Salem by train in the early hours, a car can be waiting at the station to bring you home to Neyveli.
Going on to Yercaud
Yercaud is a short climb above Salem on a ghat road with a series of hairpin bends. If you want to go on to Yercaud, book it as Neyveli to Yercaud rather than Neyveli to Salem, because the ghat section carries a hill charge, paid at actuals. Yercaud is busiest in May, when the summer festival and flower show are held, and on weekends through the hot months.
What is extra on this trip
The fare in the table pays for the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata. Tolls on the highway and parking at the station or hospital are paid at actuals. A night allowance applies if the car is on the road between 10 PM and 6 AM, which is worth noting for early trains. The route stays inside Tamil Nadu, so no inter-state permit is needed, and there is no hill charge unless you go up to Yercaud.
Good times to travel
Morning starts between 6 and 8 AM get you to Salem before the city’s office traffic and the midday heat, which is fierce from March to May. Salem’s mango season runs roughly from April to June, and fruit sellers line the roads into the city; many families make a point of buying a box on the way back. The Aadi festival at the Kottai Mariamman Temple, in July–August, draws large crowds into the old town, so allow extra time if your drop is near the temple then.
Drop points in Salem
We regularly drop at:
- Salem Junction railway station.
- The new bus stand, for onward buses.
- Hospitals across the city, including the government hospital and private hospitals.
- Colleges and university campuses on the edges of the city.
- Offices and traders in the textile and sago markets.
- Salem airport at Kamalapuram, outside the city, for the limited flights that operate there.
Taxi, bus or train?
Buses run frequently between the towns on this road, and for a single traveller with a light bag a bus via Virudhachalam or Ulundurpet is cheap and reasonable. Trains from Neyveli to Salem are not convenient. The car makes sense when you are catching a particular train, when there is a patient or an elder in the group, when you are carrying samples or goods for business, or when you want to reach a specific address without changing buses. A sedan suits most trips; choose an SUV or Innova Crysta for families with luggage or a group going on to Yercaud.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 150 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
