Cuddalore to Salem Taxi — 193 km Inland to the Mango City
Cuddalore to Salem is about 193 km by road, a drive of 3–4 hours that can comfortably be done in a morning. It links a coastal port town with one of the biggest commercial centres of western Tamil Nadu, known for its steel plant, sago factories, silver anklets and, in summer, its mangoes. Our passengers on this pair include students heading back to Salem’s engineering and medical colleges, traders and factory staff, families visiting relatives, and holidaymakers who carry on up the hairpin bends to Yercaud.
Towns between the sea and the Shevaroys
Leaving Cuddalore, the car runs inland through Panruti, a town known for cashew and jackfruit, and reaches the highway junction at Ulundurpet. From there the Salem road turns west through Kallakurichi and Chinnasalem, crosses into Salem district near Thalaivasal, and continues through Attur, Valapady and Ayodhyapattinam before entering the city. As you go west you can see the low, wooded line of the Kalvarayan hills off to the north, and closer to Salem the Shevaroy range that holds Yercaud starts to fill the horizon.
The section from Ulundurpet to Salem is a busy two- and four-lane road with town crossings at Kallakurichi and Attur. It is not difficult, but trucks and buses are steady all day, so a 3–4 hour estimate allows for the usual slowdowns. Your driver knows where to overtake and where to be patient.
Picking you up in Cuddalore
Because this is a short run, many people book it at short notice: a student back from a holiday, or a parent called to Salem for a college function. We collect from anywhere in town. Popular pickup points include the Cuddalore bus stand, Cuddalore Port Junction station in the Old Town, the collectorate side of Manjakuppam, and homes near the port and Silver Beach. If you are travelling from Neyveli, Vadalur or Chidambaram, we can start there and route accordingly; the distance changes, so say so when you book.
A morning start, a same-day return
A 7 AM departure has you in Salem by around 10:30 or 11, in time for a college admission desk, a bank appointment or a family lunch. If you plan to come back the same evening, a round trip with waiting time is usually simpler than looking for a return taxi in Salem. Starting earlier is fine, but driving before 6 AM or after 10 PM carries a night allowance, paid at actuals along with tolls and parking.
Where people get down in Salem
Salem has several busy hubs. We often drop at the new bus stand, at Salem Junction railway station at Suramangalam, around the Kottai Mariamman temple and the old town market, in the Fairlands and Hasthampatti residential areas, and at the city’s hospitals and colleges. For steel plant or industrial estate visits, share the gate name. Mettur dam, about an hour north-west, makes a good half-day outing if you have the car for the day.
Up the ghat road to Yercaud
Many Cuddalore families use Salem as the base for a short hill break. Yercaud sits at roughly 1,500 metres on the Shevaroy hills, reached by a ghat road with around twenty hairpin bends that starts on the city’s northern edge. The climb carries a hill charge in addition to the fare, so mention Yercaud when you book. The lake, Lady’s Seat viewpoint and the coffee estates are the usual stops. The Yercaud summer festival is usually held in May, when the town is crowded and rooms fill early. Anyone prone to motion sickness should eat lightly before the climb and sit in front.
Mango season and food stops
Salem is famous for mangoes, with roadside stalls selling local varieties from roughly April to June. Panruti, on your way out of Cuddalore, has jackfruit at its best at about the same time of year, and cashew all year. For a meal, Attur and the Salem bypass have plenty of eateries, though on a 3–4 hour run most people only need a tea halt near Kallakurichi.
Is a taxi worth it for 193 km?
Honestly, for a single traveller with one bag, a government bus via Ulundurpet is the cheapest way to reach Salem. A taxi earns its keep when there are three or more of you, when you are moving a student’s belongings into a hostel, when you want to stop at Panruti or visit Yercaud, or when you need to be somewhere at a fixed hour. A sedan is enough for most families on this pair; pick an SUV if you have hostel luggage or more than four people.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 193 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
