Trichy Airport to Velankanni Taxi — 157 km Through the Delta to the Basilica
Trichy airport to Velankanni is 157 km by road, a drive of two to three hours across the Cauvery delta to the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health. A large share of the people who book it have just come home on a flight from the Gulf, Singapore or Malaysia, and Trichy is the nearest airport for the delta districts. For many of them the first stop in India is a thanksgiving visit to Our Lady before going home. Others are pilgrim families from elsewhere in India who have flown in for a vow, a novena or the September feast.
Clearing an international arrival without the worry
Coming off an international flight means immigration, the baggage belt and customs before you even see the exit, and with heavy bags that can take a while. You do not need to rush. Before you land you will already have the driver’s name, photo and car number. When the flight touches down he calls or sends a WhatsApp message, then waits at the arrivals pickup point with a name board. If your Indian SIM is not working yet, the WhatsApp message reaches you as soon as you have any data connection.
Send us the flight number with the booking. The arrival is tracked, and if the flight comes in late the pickup time shifts with it. You do not pay extra for a delay you had no control over. The airport entry or parking fee for the car is settled at actuals, as are tolls on the road.
Suitcases, cartons and family members
People returning from a long stint abroad rarely travel light, and families often come to the airport to meet them, so both seats and boot space fill up fast. A sedan carries two large suitcases plus cabin bags. An SUV carries three and an Innova four. If you have taped cartons as well as suitcases, or relatives joining you at the airport, tell us the count at booking and we will send a car that fits everyone and everything. For a bigger welcoming party, ask about a Tempo Traveller.
The road: Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam
The airport is on the south-eastern side of Trichy, the same side as Thanjavur, so the driver does not need to go through the crowded old town around the Rock Fort. The first leg runs to Thanjavur through rice country, with the Cauvery’s channels running beside and under the road. From Thanjavur the route continues east to Thiruvarur, the temple town of the great chariot, and on to Nagapattinam on the coast. Velankanni is a short drive south of Nagapattinam.
The whole trip stays inside Tamil Nadu, so there is no inter-state permit and no hill charge; the delta is flat all the way. The slow parts are the town stretches in Thanjavur and Thiruvarur, especially on market mornings.
Your landing time and the day at Velankanni
The Basilica is open long hours, and Masses run through the day in Tamil, English and other languages, so there is rarely a bad time to arrive. What changes with the clock is how you feel. Many Gulf and South-East Asia flights reach Trichy late at night or in the early hours. Driving between 10 PM and 6 AM brings a night allowance for the driver, paid at actuals. Some families accept that gladly so they can be at the shrine for the first Mass of the morning; others prefer to rest near Trichy and leave after breakfast.
Landing in the morning or early afternoon gives you an easy run, with time to check in at a lodge, wash, and reach the Basilica for an evening Mass or the candle procession. If you want to stop at the Big Temple in Thanjavur on the way, go in daylight; it sits right on the route and an hour there is enough to see the vimana up close.
Where the car drops you
Most drops are at the lodges and guest houses around the shrine, or as close to the Basilica as traffic allows. Others ask for the Shrine Basilica itself, the Our Lady’s Tank chapel, the Morning Star church or the beach. During the annual feast, from 29 August to 8 September, the town is packed and traffic is controlled near the church, so the driver may have to set you down a little further out. Christmas, New Year, Holy Week and Easter are also very busy.
Taxi or bus and train after a long flight
Buses and trains do serve Velankanni, but none of them start at the airport. You would first take a car or auto into Trichy, find the right bus or train, and then change again with all your luggage, probably after a night flight. For one person with a backpack that is fine. For a family with suitcases, cartons and elders, a single car from the arrivals pickup point to the lodge door is far less tiring, and the same driver stays with you the whole way.
Adding Nagore or going home after the visit
The Nagore dargah is a short detour north of Nagapattinam, and many families, Christian and otherwise, visit both. If you are heading home to another delta town after Velankanni, such as Thiruvarur, Mannargudi or Karaikal, you can book a multi-stop trip and keep the same car.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 157 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are clear before you confirm.
