Bangalore to Tiruvannamalai Taxi — 210 km to the Fire Temple at Arunachala
At 210 km and about 4.5 hours, this route runs southeast from Bangalore through Hosur, Krishnagiri and Uthangarai to Tiruvannamalai, the town beneath the sacred Arunachala hill and home to the Arunachaleswarar temple.
The road southeast
The drive crosses the border at Attibele, follows the highway through Krishnagiri, then a state road through farmland before the hill appears on the skyline.
Girivalam and the full moon
Devotees walk barefoot around Arunachala, a circuit of about 14 km, and full-moon nights, or pournami, draw hundreds of thousands, with traffic near the temple restricted and rooms booked out weeks ahead.
Vehicle choice
A sedan suits a couple or small group; an SUV is better for families.
Booking
Book early for pournami weekends, and let us know if you want to arrive the day before.
What to see
The Arunachaleswarar temple has some of the tallest gopurams in Tamil Nadu, and the hill is dotted with caves, including Skandashram, where the sage Ramana Maharshi lived. The Ramanasramam draws visitors from across the world for meditation and quiet stays. Girivalam is done at night and early morning to avoid the heat, and the route has eight directional lingams.
Good to know
The Ramanasramam, at the foot of the hill, and the Seshadri Swami Ashram nearby offer quiet stays and meditation for visitors of all backgrounds, while Virupaksha Cave and Skandashram lie on short walks up the hill. The Karthigai Deepam festival in November or December, when a huge lamp is lit on the peak, brings the biggest crowds of the year, and traffic restrictions around the town are strict. The town itself is small and quiet outside festival days, with simple restaurants serving vegetarian meals.
Before you travel
Check the pournami dates, book a room well ahead, carry water and comfortable footwear, and dress modestly. Note that cars may be stopped a few kilometres from the temple on busy days, so agree a drop and pickup point with the driver.
Where to stop on the way
Krishnagiri, about 90 minutes out, has good restaurants, and Uthangarai and Chengam offer simple tea stops before Tiruvannamalai.
What the fare includes
The quoted fare covers the vehicle, driver, fuel and driver bata for the full 210 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and all of them are listed before you book. A round trip adds the driver's daily bata for time spent away from home, and the full breakdown is shown before you confirm the booking.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are always clear before you confirm.
