Kanyakumari to Cuddalore Taxi — 596 km to the Port Town on the Gadilam
A taxi from Kanyakumari to Cuddalore covers about 596 km in 11–12 hours of driving. Cuddalore is a district headquarters and an old port town where the Gadilam river meets the sea, with a large industrial belt, and the people who book this run reflect that: engineers and contract staff heading to the SIPCOT units or Neyveli, families going home to the Cuddalore and Chidambaram area, and pilgrims bound for Thiruvanthipuram, Vadalur or the Nataraja temple at Chidambaram.
Three legs to the coast
From the Cape to Tirunelveli. The first hour and a half takes you past Suchindram and Nagercoil and out of Kanniyakumari district through the Aralvaimozhi pass, with wind turbines on the hills either side, before the plains open up towards Tirunelveli. This is NH 44, which starts at Kanyakumari.
Tirunelveli to Trichy. The four-lane highway continues through Kovilpatti and Virudhunagar to Madurai, then the car takes the Madurai–Trichy road through Melur and Viralimalai and goes round Trichy on the bypass. This middle leg is the longest and the easiest.
Trichy to Cuddalore. North of Trichy the route follows the Chennai highway through Perambalur. Somewhere along the stretch towards Ulundurpet, the car leaves the highway and heads east to the coast. Which turn the driver takes depends on where in Cuddalore you are going and the condition of the roads that week. Expect the last part to be through smaller towns and cashew country around Panruti, so it is slower than the highway above it.
Start times, rest and the night allowance
Eleven to twelve hours of driving plus meals means a thirteen-hour day. If you leave Kanyakumari at about 5 AM, you should reach Cuddalore in the early evening, before the two-lane final leg gets busy with local traffic. Leaving earlier means the first stretch falls inside 10 PM–6 AM, and the night allowance applies, paid at actuals. Overnight departures are possible too. In that case the driver will stop for a rest halt on the highway, and the night allowance covers the trip.
Where you will be met in Kanyakumari
- Hotels and lodges near the sea front, whether your room faces the sunrise or the sunset point; the driver comes to the door.
- The ferry jetty for the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, if you want one last visit before you set off.
- Kanyakumari railway station and the town bus stand, for people coming in by train or bus.
- Nagercoil, about 20 km away, for travellers staying with family or working there.
The nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram; for a pickup from there, mention it when booking so we can plan the extra hours.
Arriving in Cuddalore and around it
Cuddalore has two centres, and it helps to know which one you need. The Old Town (OT) side includes Thirupathiripuliyur and the Pataleeswarar temple, while Manjakuppam in the New Town has the collectorate and government offices. The SIPCOT industrial estate lies along the road towards Chidambaram, and Silver Beach and the remains of Fort St David are on the coast. Just west of town is Thiruvanthipuram, with the Devanathaswamy temple, a common stop for families visiting for a vow or a function.
Plenty of bookings end a little beyond the city: Neyveli township, Vadalur, Panruti, or Chidambaram to the south, from where the Pichavaram mangroves are close by. Tell us the final address and we will plan the drive to finish there.
Festivals and weather on the Cuddalore coast
Chidambaram is busiest during Arudra Darshanam in Margazhi (December–January) and the Natyanjali dance festival around Maha Shivaratri in Masi (February–March). At Vadalur, Thai Poosam (January–February) brings large crowds for the Jothi darshan at the Sathya Gnana Sabhai founded by Ramalinga Vallalar. Masi Magam also draws crowds to the Cuddalore seashore for temple processions and ritual bathing.
The northeast monsoon from October to December brings the heaviest rain to this coast, and cyclone warnings are not unusual. If a warning is out for your travel date, we will call you to talk about shifting the trip rather than drive into it.
Food along the way
Tirunelveli halwa and Kovilpatti kadalai mittai are the snacks people pick up in the first few hours. Madurai is the usual breakfast or lunch stop, and the stretch past Trichy has highway eateries suited to a quick meal. On the final leg, Panruti is known for its jackfruit and cashews, so look out for roadside stalls if you are travelling in season.
Is the train an option?
Cuddalore is on the railway, but it sits on the line between Villupuram and Mayiladuthurai rather than on the main line, so from Kanyakumari you usually need a change. Buses go via Villupuram or Trichy. For one person with a backpack, that is workable. For families, people carrying tools or luggage, or anyone heading to Neyveli, SIPCOT or a village address, a direct taxi avoids the change.
The fare table above covers the car, driver, fuel and driver bata. Toll plazas on the highway, parking and the night allowance are extra and paid at actuals. This is an all-Tamil Nadu route with no ghat climb.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 596 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are clear before you confirm.
