Kanyakumari to Kodaikanal Taxi — Sea Level to the Palani Hills in 337 km
Kanyakumari to Kodaikanal is about 337 km and 6–7 hours by car. It is one of the most satisfying drives in the state: you start where three seas meet and finish at around 2,000 metres in the Palani Hills, in cool air and pine forest. Honeymooners, families on a south Tamil Nadu holiday and school groups often pair the two, seeing the Cape first and then going up to the hills for a few days. The last part of the trip is a ghat road climb, and that shapes most of the planning below.
The ghat climb and the hill charge
Most of the distance is on the plains. The real climb starts near Batlagundu (Vathalagundu), where the ghat road begins its long series of bends up through the forest, past the Silver Cascade falls, to Kodaikanal town. Plan on spending well over an hour on this stretch, more on weekends and in the summer season, when traffic moves slowly behind buses.
Because the car climbs a ghat road, a hill charge applies on this route. Like tolls and parking, it is extra and paid at actuals, not built into the one-way rate on the fare table. If you travel between 10 PM and 6 AM, a night allowance is also added at actuals. We always tell you about these at booking so there are no surprises in the hills.
From the Cape to the foot of the hills
From Kanyakumari the car heads north through the Aralvaimozhi pass, with its rows of windmills, and on to Tirunelveli. The national highway then carries you past Kovilpatti and Virudhunagar towards Madurai, where the driver takes the bypass and turns northwest towards Batlagundu. You can also ask to approach from the Dindigul side and climb by a different ghat road; it is usually longer, so the driver will advise on the day.
Leave early, climb in daylight
Ghat roads are easier and safer in daylight, and Kodaikanal often fills with mist by late afternoon, especially from October to January. A start between 6 and 7 AM from Kanyakumari puts you at the foot of the hills by early afternoon and in town before dark. If you want the sunrise at the Cape before leaving, go to the viewpoint, come back for breakfast, and set off straight after. Avoid a late-afternoon departure; it puts the ghat climb at night.
Our Kanyakumari pickups
We pick up from the seafront hotels near the sunset and sunrise points, from guest houses near the ferry jetty for the Vivekananda Rock, from Kanyakumari railway station and from the bus stand. Travellers staying in Nagercoil, about 20 km north, are collected there, which also saves a little time on the route. If you are coming straight from Thiruvananthapuram airport, the nearest airfield, let us know: the trip then starts in Kerala, so the distance changes and an inter-state permit applies, at actuals.
Picking a car for the hills
A sedan handles the ghat road well for two to four people with light luggage. For families with suitcases, prams or elders who need room to stretch, an SUV (Ertiga, Marazzo or similar) or an Innova Crysta is more comfortable on the bends and has space for warm clothes and shopping from the town market. All our cars are air-conditioned. In the hills, most drivers turn the AC off and open the windows a little; fresh air helps with motion sickness.
Travel tips for the ghat road
- Eat a light meal on the plains before the climb, and avoid a heavy lunch right before the bends.
- If anyone gets carsick, seat them in front and ask the driver for a short stop; there are safe places to pull over.
- Keep a sweater or shawl in the car, not in the boot. It gets cold quickly as you climb, even in April.
- Rules for vehicles entering Kodaikanal have changed in recent seasons; check whether any entry pass is needed before your date.
Where we drop you in Kodaikanal
Most drops are at hotels and homestays around Kodai Lake, in the town centre near the bus stand and market, or on the roads leading out towards Coaker’s Walk and Bryant Park. We also drop at Kodaikanal International School, the solar observatory area and cottages farther out of town where the road allows. Once you are settled, the usual sights are Pillar Rocks, Guna Caves, the Kurinji Andavar Temple and boating on the lake.
Seasons in Kodaikanal
April to June is the peak season, when families escape the heat on the plains; the summer festival and flower show at Bryant Park are held in May, and hotels fill up early. The northeast monsoon in October and November brings heavy rain and fog, which can slow the ghat road. December to February is clear but cold at night, and good for walking.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 337 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are clear before you confirm.
