Kanyakumari to Thanjavur Taxi — 426 km from the Cape to the Big Temple
A one-way drop from Kanyakumari to Thanjavur covers about 426 km and takes 7–8 hours of driving, depending on traffic around Madurai and how long you stop to eat. Most people who book this pair are on a temple circuit: they have seen the sunrise at the southern tip and now want to reach Chola country without going back the way they came. Others are families visiting relatives in the delta, students heading to colleges around Thanjavur, and patients with appointments at the hospitals in town. With a drop taxi you pay one way only and the driver returns empty, so there is no need to keep the car for days.
Starting from the southern tip
Our drivers collect you wherever you stayed. Many travellers are in the lodges and hotels that cluster around the sunrise viewpoint and the road down to the Vivekananda Rock ferry jetty; the car can wait at the hotel gate while you finish breakfast. We also pick up at Kanyakumari railway station, the town bus stand, and from homes and hotels in Nagercoil, the district headquarters about 20 km up the road. If you have just flown into Thiruvananthapuram, the nearest airport, tell us at booking: starting in Kerala changes the distance, and an inter-state permit then applies, paid at actuals.
The road north through Tirunelveli and Madurai
The first hour takes you through the Aralvaimozhi gap, where the hills of the Western Ghats come close to the road and the wind farms around Muppandal line both sides. The highway then runs flat and fast through Valliyur and Nanguneri to Tirunelveli. From there it is the long national highway (NH 44) stretch north through Kovilpatti, Sattur and Virudhunagar, skirting Madurai on the ring road.
After Madurai there are two sensible ways to Thanjavur. One continues on the four-lane road to Tiruchirappalli and turns east for the last stretch into Thanjavur. The other cuts across through Melur and the Pudukkottai side, which is narrower but often quieter. The driver will decide on the day based on traffic and road work, and you can ask for one or the other if you want to see a particular town.
When to leave
With 7–8 hours on the road, a departure between 6 and 7 AM gets you into Thanjavur by mid-afternoon, in time to check in and walk to the Big Temple for the evening light on the granite tower. If you want to watch the sunrise at the Cape first, plan to leave by about 8 AM and accept a late-afternoon arrival. Leaving before 6 AM is possible, but a night allowance applies for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM, paid at actuals. Afternoon departures put the Madurai and Trichy stretches into evening traffic, so we suggest a morning start.
Food and breaks on the way
The drive passes through towns with dishes worth a short stop. Tirunelveli is known across Tamil Nadu for its halwa, and Kovilpatti for kadalai mittai, the peanut and jaggery candy sold in packets along the highway. Virudhunagar is famous for its fried parotta, and if you are near Madurai around lunch you can try a glass of jigarthanda. There are clean highway restaurants and fuel stations with washrooms every hour or so; most travellers take one breakfast break near Tirunelveli and a lunch break around Madurai.
Where we drop you in Thanjavur
The most common drop is a hotel near the Brihadeeswarar Temple, the Big Temple, built by Rajaraja Chola more than a thousand years ago and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We also drop at Thanjavur Junction railway station, the bus stands, the Thanjavur Medical College hospital, the palace complex with the Saraswathi Mahal library, and campuses on the outskirts. If your trip continues, tell us in advance: Thiruvaiyaru is a short drive north, and Kumbakonam, with its many temples, is about an hour or so further on.
Thanjavur through the year
The town is busiest during the Sathaya Vizha in Aippasi (October–November), when the birth star of Rajaraja Chola is celebrated at the Big Temple. In Thai (January), the Thyagaraja Aradhana at Thiruvaiyaru draws musicians and listeners from across the country, and hotels in Thanjavur fill up. Maha Shivaratri in Masi (February–March) also brings crowds. April and May are hot, so plan temple visits for early morning or evening. The northeast monsoon brings rain to the delta from October to December, which can slow the last stretch.
Taxi, bus or train for this pair
Direct trains between Kanyakumari and Thanjavur are few, and most rail plans need a change at Madurai or Tiruchirappalli. Buses usually involve a change too, with luggage moved between stands. For a solo traveller with a light bag, the bus is cheaper. For a family, elders, or anyone carrying temple offerings and luggage, a car that picks up at the hotel door and drops at the next one saves most of a day.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 426 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are clear before you confirm.
