Cuddalore to Kodaikanal Taxi — 368 km from the Sea to the Palani Hills
This is a full day’s journey from sea level to a hill town at roughly 2,100 metres. The distance from Cuddalore to Kodaikanal is 368 km and the drive takes 7–8 hours, the last part of it a winding ghat climb. Most bookings are family holidays in the summer school break, honeymoon trips, college groups and retired couples escaping the coastal heat, so this page is about getting you up the hill rested rather than rushed.
Plan the start around the ghat
The single most useful piece of advice: be at the foot of the ghat by early afternoon. Mist often rolls over the upper road in the afternoon, and after dark the bends are slower and harder on anyone prone to motion sickness. Working back from that, a start from Cuddalore between 4 and 5 AM is ideal. The driver will come to your door in Thirupapuliyur, Manjakuppam or the Old Town at that hour; if you are staying near the Devanathaswamy temple at Thiruvanthipuram or at a guest house by Silver Beach, give the location the night before so he can reach you without hunting in the dark.
Travellers who arrive at Thirupapuliyur or Cuddalore Port Junction station late at night can rest and be collected early, or be picked up straight from the platform. Pickups from the bus stand or from Neyveli and Chidambaram are also possible; tell us when booking.
The road, in three parts
The plains to Trichy. The car heads inland to join the Chennai–Trichy highway, either through Vriddhachalam or by way of Villupuram and Ulundurpet. It then runs past Perambalur and the Samayapuram Mariamman temple and takes the bypass around Trichy. This is the fastest part of the trip.
Trichy to Batlagundu. South-west of Trichy the road passes Manapparai, famous across Tamil Nadu for its murukku, and reaches Dindigul, known for its biryani and its locks. From Dindigul it continues to Batlagundu at the foot of the hills.
The ghat. From Batlagundu the ghat road climbs through hairpin bends, coffee and pepper estates and the Silver Cascade waterfall, which most drivers stop at briefly. The climb is the reason a hill charge applies on this route; it is extra and paid at actuals, together with tolls, parking and any night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM. A second, less used ghat climbs from the Palani side, and some families go that way so they can visit the Murugan temple at Palani first.
Eating and resting on the way
Breakfast fits well around Perambalur or the Trichy outskirts, and lunch at Dindigul is a habit for many drivers on this road. Eat lightly before the ghat if anyone in the car gets queasy on curves. Stops for photographs at the viewpoints on the way up are fine, but they are on a narrow road, so let the driver pick the safe pull-ins.
Arriving in Kodaikanal
Most families are dropped at their hotel or cottage. Many are around the lake or on the roads rising from it, and others are spread out along quieter lanes on the edge of town; some of those lanes are steep and narrow, so share the exact location and a contact number at the property. If you have not booked a stay, the driver can drop you near the lake and the bus stand, where the town is most walkable.
Things people usually plan for the following days: a walk or boat ride on the star-shaped lake, Coaker’s Walk, Bryant Park, Pillar Rocks, the Guna Caves (Devil’s Kitchen) viewpoint, Dolphin’s Nose and the Kurinji Andavar temple. The Berijam lake side lies in forest department land and access is regulated, so check locally before planning on it.
Seasons and what to pack
April to June is the peak: the summer festival and flower show at Bryant Park are held in May, roads are busy and rooms cost more. September and October are pleasant and quieter. The northeast monsoon from October to December brings heavy rain and the odd landslip on the ghat, so allow extra time. December to February is cold at night, close to freezing on some mornings, and you will want proper woollens even if Cuddalore is warm when you leave. The Neelakurinji, which blooms across these hills roughly once in twelve years, draws large crowds in the years it flowers.
In recent seasons the district has at times required an e-pass for vehicles entering Kodaikanal, and plastic is restricted in the hills. Rules change, so we confirm the current position when you book.
Which car for the hills
A sedan is fine for two to four people with moderate luggage. For six or seven, or for elders who need more legroom on a long day, an Ertiga-class SUV or Innova Crysta is the better choice, and the Crysta is noticeably steadier on the bends. College groups and joint families can ask about a Tempo Traveller. All cars are air-conditioned, though most people switch the AC off and open the windows once the air cools on the climb.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 368 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
