Cuddalore to Coimbatore Taxi — 381 km from the Coromandel Coast to Kovai
A one-way taxi from Cuddalore to Coimbatore covers about 381 km and takes 6–7 hours of driving, which makes it the longest of the common westbound runs out of Cuddalore. You start a few kilometres from the Bay of Bengal and finish in the Kongu country at the foot of the Western Ghats, crossing almost the full width of Tamil Nadu. Most people who book it are engineers and staff moving between the SIPCOT units at Cuddalore and the mills and factories around Coimbatore, students joining one of the city's many colleges, families taking an elder to a Coimbatore hospital, and devotees heading for the Isha Yoga Centre or Marudhamalai.
How the road crosses the state
The usual routing goes inland past Panruti to join the highway near Ulundurpet, then turns west through Kallakurichi, Chinnasalem and Attur to reach Salem, which is roughly the halfway mark. From Salem the four-lane Salem–Coimbatore highway carries you past Sankagiri, the Perundurai stretch near Erode and Avinashi before you enter Coimbatore along Avinashi Road. The Salem–Coimbatore section is the easiest driving of the day: wide, divided and well used by trucks and buses, so your driver can hold a steady pace. The slower parts are the two-lane bits before Ulundurpet and the town crossings between Kallakurichi and Attur, where market traffic, school buses and tractors share the road.
If you need to drop someone at Erode or pick up a relative at Salem on the way, tell us when you book. Both sit on or close to this line, so it adds time rather than a long detour, and the driver will plan the stop in advance.
Leaving Cuddalore before the sun is high
With six to seven hours on the road, the start time decides how the day feels. Leaving Cuddalore at around 6 AM usually brings you into Coimbatore by early afternoon, with a breakfast halt near Kallakurichi or Attur and lunch somewhere past Salem. Leaving any earlier is possible, but note that driving between 10 PM and 6 AM attracts a night allowance, paid on top of the fare along with tolls and parking. An afternoon start means you reach Coimbatore after dark, which is fine for a hotel check-in but tiring for elders.
Shift workers from the SIPCOT estate often prefer to leave straight after a night shift ends. We can collect you at the estate gate or your quarters, so you do not have to go home first and then back out again.
Pickup on the Cuddalore side
For this long run most travellers want a doorstep pickup with luggage loaded at home. We regularly collect from Manjakuppam near the collectorate, from the streets of the Old Town near the port, and from Thirupapuliyur in the New Town. If you are arriving by train first, the driver can wait at Cuddalore Port Junction or Thirupapuliyur station; if you are coming in by bus, the Cuddalore bus stand works too. Guests staying near Silver Beach or Fort St David can be picked up from their hotel. Travellers flying in to Puducherry’s small airport, about 25 km north, can start the trip from there as well.
Where we drop you in Coimbatore
Coimbatore spreads out in every direction, so give the driver the exact address or landmark. Frequent drops include Gandhipuram and its bus stands, Coimbatore Junction railway station, the airport at Peelamedu, the hospitals and colleges along Avinashi Road and Trichy Road, and the residential areas of RS Puram and Saibaba Colony. The Isha Yoga Centre and the Adiyogi statue lie well west of the city at the foot of the Velliangiri hills, so allow extra time in the evening traffic if that is your drop. Marudhamalai, the Murugan hill temple on the north-western edge, has a road up to the temple; Perur’s old Shiva temple is on the south-west side near the Noyyal river.
Breaks and food on the way
Salem is the natural place for a proper meal, since it falls roughly halfway and has plenty of busy vegetarian and non-vegetarian eateries along the bypass. Attur and Kallakurichi are good for an early tiffin and coffee, and the Perundurai–Avinashi stretch has highway tea shops for a last stretch of the legs. Once in Coimbatore, Kongu-style food is worth trying: arisi paruppu sadham, kola urundai and the mildly spiced chicken dishes the region is known for. Ask the driver to stop wherever you like; there is no meter running between halts.
Taxi, bus or train on this pair
Public transport between the two cities is workable but rarely direct. By rail you generally reach Villupuram or Virudhachalam first and change there, which means juggling timings and luggage. Long-distance buses are cheaper per seat but tend to run overnight and stop often. A taxi makes most sense for families, for anyone carrying household goods for a hostel or a new job, and for patients who need to lie back and rest. With an SUV or an Innova Crysta, a family of six with luggage travels together in one vehicle, and the same driver stays with you from Cuddalore to the Coimbatore gate.
Going further into the hills
Coimbatore is the jumping-off point for the Nilgiris. Some of our guests carry on through Mettupalayam and up the ghat road to Ooty or Coonoor, or take the long climb to Valparai. Those climbs carry a hill charge in addition to the fare, so mention them at booking. Mahashivaratri, in Maasi (February–March), brings very large crowds to the Isha Yoga Centre and the roads around it, and the Velliangiri hill pilgrimage season runs roughly from February to May.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 381 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are clear before you confirm.
