Cuddalore to Erode Taxi — 279 km to the Turmeric and Textile Town
From Cuddalore to Erode is about 279 km, a drive of 5–6 hours. Erode is a working town more than a tourist one: it is one of India’s best-known turmeric markets, a centre for handloom and powerloom cloth, and home to the SIPCOT industrial estate at Perundurai. Most people who book this route are traders, buyers and factory staff, along with families visiting relatives and pilgrims heading for the Bhavani confluence, Kodumudi or Chennimalai.
Travelling with samples and stock
Business travellers on this pair often carry cartons of samples or cloth bundles back from the Erode markets. If that is you, mention the load when you book. A sedan takes a few cartons in the boot, but an SUV or Innova Crysta with the rear seats folded gives far more room, and the driver can help arrange the load so it does not shift. Since the same driver stays with you through the day, he can wait while you visit several wholesalers before the return.
The way west via Salem
The quickest line from Cuddalore runs through Panruti and Ulundurpet, then west past Kallakurichi and Attur to Salem. Beyond Salem the car takes the Coimbatore highway as far as Sankagiri, where the old hill fort stands above the road, and then turns towards Bhavani, crossing the Kaveri into Erode. A route through Trichy and Karur also exists but is noticeably longer, so drivers rarely use it unless you have business in those towns.
Salem marks roughly two-thirds of the journey and is the usual lunch stop. If you would like to visit the Ardhanareeswarar hill temple at Tiruchengode, it is a short detour from the Sankagiri area; add it at booking, as the hill road and the darshan take time.
Getting picked up in Cuddalore
Traders based in the Old Town near the port often want the car at the shop, with cartons loaded before departure, so give us the shop address rather than a home address in that case. Other common pickups are the SIPCOT estate on the southern side of town, homes in Thirupapuliyur and Manjakuppam, and the Cuddalore bus stand. Travellers coming in by train can meet the driver at Cuddalore Port Junction.
Timing the trip
For a buying trip, an early start helps: leaving Cuddalore at 6 AM puts you in Erode by around lunchtime, with the afternoon free for the markets. If you start earlier, the hours before 6 AM count for the night allowance, which, like tolls and parking, is charged separately. For a family visit, a mid-morning start and an evening arrival works fine.
Drop points in and around Erode
We regularly drop at Erode Junction, one of the bigger railway junctions in the region, the central bus terminus, the turmeric and cloth market areas, hotels in the town centre, and the Perundurai SIPCOT estate on the Coimbatore side. A few places nearby are worth knowing about:
- Bhavani Kooduthurai — the confluence of the Bhavani and the Kaveri, with the Sangameswarar temple, where families perform rites for ancestors.
- Kodumudi — a temple town on the Kaveri south of Erode.
- Chennimalai — a Murugan hill temple near Perundurai, also known for handloom bedsheets and towels.
- Bannari Amman temple — near Sathyamangalam, on the road towards the Dhimbam ghat and Karnataka.
If you plan to continue past Bannari over the Dhimbam ghat towards Mysuru, a hill charge applies for the climb, and an inter-state permit is needed once the car crosses into Karnataka. Both are extra to the fare. Carry ID for the border check.
Festivals and river days
The Erode Periya Mariamman temple festival around Panguni (March–April) fills the town centre. Aadi Perukku in Aadi (July–August) brings crowds to the river ghats at Bhavani Kooduthurai and Kodumudi, and Mahalaya Amavasai in Purattasi (September–October) is another heavy day at the confluence. Expect slow traffic near the bathing ghats on those dates.
Rail, road coach or taxi
Erode is well connected by rail, but from Cuddalore you first need to reach a junction such as Villupuram or Salem, so the total journey is long with a change. Buses run via Salem but stop often. A taxi is the practical choice when you are carrying goods, travelling as a family, or need to visit more than one place in a day.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 279 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road.
