Cuddalore to Palani Taxi — 330 km to the Hill of Dhandayuthapani
Palani is the most visited of the six abodes of Murugan, and for many households in Cuddalore district it is a vow kept every year or two. The taxi covers the 330 km in 6–7 hours, so you can leave before dawn, reach the foot of the hill by early afternoon, climb or take the winch for darshan, and stay the night in town or carry on. This page is written for that kind of trip: pilgrims, often several generations together, sometimes with kavadi or a child’s tonsure planned.
Picking up the family in Cuddalore
Temple trips tend to start from the home, often after a prayer at the local shrine. The driver can wait outside the Pataleeswarar temple in Thirupapuliyur or the Devanathaswamy temple at Thiruvanthipuram for a few minutes before setting off. For larger families split between houses in Manjakuppam, the Old Town and Thirupapuliyur, give us every address and the order you want, and the driver will plan the collection so no one waits on the roadside at 4 AM.
Relatives joining from Chennai can be met off the train at Cuddalore Port Junction or Thirupapuliyur, and the bus stand works as a common meeting point. Pickups in Neyveli or Chidambaram can be added for relatives living there.
The way to Palani
The car goes inland to the Chennai–Trichy highway and follows it past Perambalur and Samayapuram, where many pilgrims stop briefly at the Mariamman temple. After skirting Trichy, the road runs south-west through Manapparai to Dindigul, and from Dindigul it heads west through Oddanchatram, a busy vegetable-market town, into Palani. The hill and the temple gopuram come into view on the last stretch across the plain.
Meal breaks usually fall near Perambalur for breakfast and at Dindigul or Oddanchatram for lunch. Many pilgrims keep to simple vegetarian food on the day of darshan; tell the driver and he will stop at suitable places.
Festivals and the busy months
Palani has a crowded calendar. Thai Poosam in Thai (January–February) is the largest: for days beforehand, thousands of devotees walk to Palani carrying kavadi, and the Dindigul–Palani road is lined with walkers. Cars move slowly, and the police may divert traffic. Panguni Uthiram (March–April), Vaikasi Visakam (May–June) and Kanda Sashti in Aippasi (October–November) also bring big crowds, as do Tamil New Year, monthly Karthigai days and long weekends.
If you are travelling for one of these, book early, expect to walk from wherever the car can stop, and allow extra hours for the return. If the date is up to you, a weekday outside the festival weeks makes for a far easier darshan, especially with elders.
At the hill
The temple of Dhandayuthapani Swamy stands on top of the hill. You can climb the several hundred steps, walk the gentler elephant path, or use the winch or the rope car, which have queues of their own on busy days. At the foot are the Thiru Avinankudi temple and the shops selling panchamirtham, the temple’s famous prasadam. Tonsuring is done at designated halls near the foothill.
The usual drop is in the foothill area near the winch station and the start of the steps, or at your lodge. Tamil Nadu temples expect traditional or modest dress, and footwear is left at counters before the climb. On festival days the car will stop wherever the police permit and the driver will agree a meeting point with you for the return.
Adding Kodaikanal or other temples
A ghat road climbs from the Palani side to Kodaikanal, so some families turn the pilgrimage into a short hill holiday. If you add it, a hill charge applies, paid at actuals. Others prefer to complete more of the Arupadai Veedu, for example Thiruparankundram and Pazhamudircholai near Madurai; tell us the plan and we will suggest an order.
Choosing between taxi, bus and train
Government buses reach Palani from Trichy and Dindigul, so a determined solo traveller can get there in two or three legs. Palani also has a railway station on the Dindigul–Pollachi line, but there is no simple through train from Cuddalore. A taxi is the practical choice for families with elders who cannot manage changes, for groups carrying kavadi or offerings, and for anyone who wants to leave Cuddalore before dawn and be at the hill the same afternoon. A sedan takes four; an Ertiga-class SUV or Innova Crysta takes six or seven; for a larger family or a temple group, ask about a Tempo Traveller. Tolls, parking and any night allowance between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 330 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
