Kanyakumari to Villupuram Taxi — 573 km from the Cape to the Junction Town
The one-way drive from Kanyakumari to Villupuram covers about 573 km and takes 10–11 hours of actual driving, so with meals and short halts it is a full day on the road. Most people who book it are families heading home after a holiday at the Cape, pilgrims returning from the Kumari Amman temple, and people from the Villupuram, Kallakurichi and Tiruvannamalai side who would rather not change trains with elders and luggage. Villupuram is also where many travellers want a drop that a train cannot give them: a village outside town, Gingee, Thirukovilur or a relative's house off the main road.
The road north, town by town
From Kanyakumari the car runs past Suchindram and around Nagercoil, then climbs gently through the Aralvaimozhi pass, the gap in the Western Ghats where the wind farms line both sides of the highway. This is NH 44, which begins at Kanyakumari, and it carries you as a four-lane road through Tirunelveli, Kovilpatti, Sattur and Virudhunagar to the Madurai ring road.
At Madurai the route leaves NH 44 and takes the highway to Tiruchirappalli through Melur, Kottampatti and Viralimalai. The car skirts Trichy on the bypass, passes Samayapuram and then follows the Trichy–Chennai highway north through Perambalur and Ulundurpet to Villupuram. It is divided highway for nearly the whole distance, which is why a 573 km day is realistic at all; slow patches are usually town bypasses, harvest-season tractors and the odd stretch of road works.
How the day breaks down, and the night allowance
Ten to eleven hours is the time at the wheel. Add a breakfast stop, lunch and two or three tea and toilet breaks and you should plan on twelve to thirteen hours door to door. A 5 or 6 AM start from Kanyakumari usually puts you in Villupuram in the evening, before late traffic builds on the Trichy–Chennai stretch.
Starting earlier than 6 AM, or driving on after 10 PM, means part of the trip falls inside the 10 PM–6 AM window, and a night allowance for the driver is added and paid at actuals. Some families prefer to leave Kanyakumari after dinner and sleep in the car, reaching Villupuram in the morning; that works, but the whole run is then night driving, so the allowance applies and our driver will take a proper rest halt on the way. We would rather add thirty minutes than push a tired driver.
Food and halts worth planning
Tirunelveli is the place to pick up the town's famous halwa, and Kovilpatti is known for kadalai mittai, the peanut-and-jaggery sweet, which makes a light snack for the car. Madurai falls close to the halfway mark and is the natural place for a proper breakfast or an early lunch; if anyone in the car has not tried jigarthanda, this is the town for it. North of Trichy, many travellers ask to stop at the Samayapuram Mariamman temple, which sits right beside the highway, for a quick darshan. Highway eateries around Perambalur and Ulundurpet are used to long-distance cars and are an easy final break before the last hour.
Collecting you in Kanyakumari
Most of our Kanyakumari pickups are from the lodges and hotels clustered between the sunrise viewpoint and the Vivekananda Rock ferry jetty, and the driver will come to your gate rather than meet you on the main road. If you are taking the first ferry to the Rock Memorial before leaving, tell us, and we will time the pickup for when you are back at the jetty rather than at dawn. We also collect from Kanyakumari railway station and the bus stand, and from homes and hotels in Nagercoil, about 20 km up the road. Travellers flying in land at Thiruvananthapuram, the nearest airport; ask us about that pickup when you book.
Where the drop usually is in Villupuram
Common drops are Villupuram Junction railway station, the new bus stand, the collectorate area and the Government Medical College at Mundiyampakkam on the Trichy side of town. Because Villupuram is a junction for so many places, a lot of bookings carry on a little further: Gingee and its fort, the Mailam Murugan temple, Thiruvennainallur, Koovagam near Ulundurpet, or Thirukovilur, which is our own home base. Tell us the final address when you book so the driver plans the last few kilometres and you are not left at a bus stand at night.
Taxi, train or bus for this pair
Trains between Kanyakumari and Chennai run through Villupuram Junction, and for one or two people with light bags a reserved berth is the cheapest way to cover the distance. The catch is availability: in school holidays, Sabarimala season and around Pongal those berths go early, and the train drops you at the station, not your door. Overnight buses run as well. A taxi makes sense when you are four to seven people, carrying holiday luggage, travelling with elders or small children, or need to reach a village beyond Villupuram the same day.
A note on charges: the fare table on this page is the price for the car, driver, fuel and driver bata. Tolls on the way, parking and any night allowance are extra and paid at actuals. This route stays inside Tamil Nadu, so there is no inter-state permit, and there is no ghat road, so no hill charge.
What the fare includes
The fare covers the car, the driver, fuel and the driver bata for the full 573 Kms. Tolls, any inter-state permit, parking, the hill charge where the road climbs a ghat, and a night allowance for driving between 10 PM and 6 AM are extra, paid at actuals, and each is listed beside the fare before you book.
Why book with Raja Drop Taxi
You pay for the one-way distance on a drop booking rather than a forced round trip, pickup is available at your home, office, the railway station or the bus stand, and every car is checked before it goes out on the road. Billing is itemised, so the fare, tolls and any extras are clear before you confirm.
